Navigation issues?

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone else has been having the same issue I have. I have an 09 with the Sport+tech. As of recently, the navigation has been off a bit. It shows my current location sometimes as far as maybe 500-1000 feet off. It tells me I'm going down a street which is parallel to the one I'm actually on. It happened a couple of times before but fixed itself quickly. As of lately, as in this week, it has been really bad. It thinks I pass the turn and recalculates the route before I even take the turn. Anyone else experiencing this?

i have premium+tech pkg. i get same problem of navi finding me on nearby street.
but it quickly refines itself back after few min. i don't have major discomfort of this problem as any electrical device can have little problems like this.

+1 This is a problem for me as well. When I was looking for my hotel in down town New Orleans for JazzFest it was off by a couple of streets and had me chasing my tail and trying to turn onto streets that didn't exist or were one-way. I finally had to do navigate the old fashioned way and look at the street numbers/signs myself.

I have had this happen only three or four times, and it was usually right after I had been on a road that was not in the pre-loaded info. I am frequently on roads that don't exist according to my navi system. This should not be the case in a car built six months ago (Oct '08), as some of these roads are from one to three years old.

I just made a thousand mile round trip, using lots of little back roads (I suffer from Daniel Boone envy), and encountered at least a dozen cases where a side or crossing road was shown on the navi, but I saw only a locked farm gate blocking a pair of wagon ruts which ran into either a field or the woods. I think the company building this data base from satellite imagery could use a field checker to verify their image interpretation.

All that aside, I practically live by this navi, and will never again be without one.

I tried using my navi to find a certain gas station and it took me to a car dealership. As I got closer it took me to another location. Kinda weird don't know if I can trust it. Btw it was in the city not some place rural.

I actually saw one of the mapping vans in Tampa a few weeks ago.

Toyota minivan with several antenna and about 30 cameras all over the roof. Tampa is a big enough city that you think they'd have fairly updated maps and they should spend more time in the rural areas that have less detailed maps. How would you all like THAT job?

I am long-since retired, but would have LOVED to have had a career charting and mapping for a company setting up a navi info base. That would have tied in very well with my cartography hobby. I love to make maps of almost anything anywhere, and have collected thousands of maps over the years. I began collecting in the 1940s, and managed to obtain hundreds of gas station-type maps from the 1930s and 1940s.

That Tampa unit you saw was not 'mapping' per se (which is now all done by satellite), but was gathering info not available from satellite imagery; such things as verifying which streets are one-way in what direction, which streets are marked with what route numbers, and taking photos for the 'bird's eye' view of surroundings. I am sure the 'bird's eye' option will become the mainstay of future navi packages, as folks not into interpreting platted maps are more comfortable seeing a view on their navi that is somewhat similar to what they see out their windshield.

I love this '09 Maxima navi screen; my ancient eyes cannot read a newspaper without a magnifying glass, but have no trouble reading this navi screen unaided.

I figured it was POI and gps confirmation of the sat maps they had. didn't think of the one way issue tho. If you love to make maps, I know of a video game you might love.....

Believe it or not, I have never played a video game. I'm more into playing with my trusty K&E slide rule, given to me by my Dad, who used it while studying at Syracuse Univ in the late 1920s and early 1930s. I used it at several colleges in the 1950s. Of course, if I were going to use this slide rule to help design the 8th generation 2014 Maxima, I would have needed to have begun several years ago.

This navi on my '09 is amazing in so many ways, but it boggles my mind that anyone would attempt to maintain a data base showing every gas station, hotel/motel (with phone numbers), street/road, library, police dept, etc, etc, in the country. That is one horse-choking 'yellow pages' pile of data.

Oh, the senility of it all. When one gets to be my age, whole decades can disappear with the (mis)tap of a key. In this case, I only lost a year. I have now corrected that post.

I never even saw the 7th gen Maxima until the last week of March of '08, when I took a tour of the Smyrna assembly line just so I could see the very early copies of the '09 coming off the line. Then, the first week of April of '08, I spent two hours standing beside the '09 Maxima at the Atlanta auto show.

But October of '07? I was still surfing the net, peeking into every Nissan file and communication I could find, trying to fathom what the '09 would look like. Nissan does a good job of keeping things secret until they are ready to announce them.

Are you sure the van wasn't associated with Google, perhaps doing some of their 'Street View' mapping??

Dunno who "owned" it.

I just happened to see them from the 2nd floor of the courthouse while I was waiting for Jury duty. It could have been anyone for all I know. It had quite a few cameras, plus 6 or so GPS dome type antennas on the roof. I suspect it was one of those companies. It wasn't black and it was too obvious to be CIA or NSA.

Were the maps in your GPS up-to-date when you bought your car? There's a 3-year old major highway about 5 miles from my house that doesn't show up in the navigation system. I see it on the Navteq website, though, so I presume it's in their newer maps. Somehow, it feels like I should be starting with accurate maps, and I'm wondering if I could get the dealership to upgrade me for free... I've only had the car for 3 weeks, but I think the dealer had it since last August.

That is still expensive at the sale price. Not to mention the dealership is going to charge you an hour or so of labor to install it(about $60 an hour at mine). While their "tech" calls or looks it up on the "Nissan Tech Support" on how to install it in the first place because he has never done it before.

So perhaps a grand total around $270 for an update. No thanks.

But on a side note, I am sure the software just installs through the CF Port. I wonder if we could download the software from it's hidden Nissan Site, and then purchase the access code from Navteq, thus installing it ourselves.

That sounds way too easy/convenient to be true. I hope you are right tho and it is as easy as plugging in an update and loading it onto the HDD.

Well Tom Tom charges me $69.95 for each map update and they are released 4 times a year. Typically I get just one. I've been told by my neighbor who had this done last March on her G37 that they hooked up a computer and she received a pin code for the technician when she purchased the update fro Navteq, the computer checks if the update is current before loading it and it also checks/records the vehicle VIN number to stop piracy. The labor was free for the update but again this was a Infinity dealership.

Yeah, I would be interested to hear the story if anyone here on the .org has done this with theirs. I hope I am wrong about the price calculations.

This is sort of a sore spot for me also. My wife and I are retired, and drive in unfamiliar areas almost daily, and have found over a hundred streets that don't show on our nav (car was built in first week of October). Conversely, there are streets that show on the nav that are now closed with trees growing from the roadbed.

Considering the big bucks we paid for this nav, I would feel an annual update should have been included.

I hope they fix the calculations used when estimating time left until you get toy our destination. Mine is always way off.

Hello All,
I have an issue. I bought the 09 Maxima and have been building it up. I have got 2x12" alpine subs, 2400 watts with a roc cap, tint, and new 20" lexani's. When I bought the car I figured I would build it up myself instead of pay for all the extra features I would not need. Needless to say, I have found that nobody has the capability to change the screen on the regular S model. I really want to put a screen, but there seems to be a problem replacing the unit that came with the car. Any body have any suggestions or can send me in the right direction?

I have had this problem as well. I was on a street right next to I-64 in Williamsburg, VA. It said that I was on I-64 and to get off on the next exit. One major problem I have had is the time estimate on routes. Example: From my house to BWI airport is an hour and 45 minutes. When I left my house on my last trip, tha NAV (on my 09 Premium+Tech Max) said that the trip was 2 hours 20 minutes. I made it in my usual hour and 45 minutes. Other trips have been way off also. Hope the next update will fix these things.

Can't you tweak the time estimates by simply customizing the average speed per road type settings (or have you done that and they're still off)?

That's what it was! The speed settings were set to AUTO. I changed all the speed setting to what people really drive.

THANKS!!!!!!
