EGR question

So my wife's 99 I30 has a 0302 code which I know is usually the EGR pipe being clogged, but this pipe was cleaned out probably 40K-50K miles ago by a shop. I read they can get clogged again somewhat quickly so I decided to remove the pipe yesterday. I tried to blow thru it and I could but it was like blowing thru a small straw. I took a coathanger and poked it thru the pipe and I must cleared it out because now I can blow thru it like it should be. Could this have caused the code even through it wasn't blocked?

Also, you think I should replace the EGR pipe gaskets or do most folks just reuse them?

I would replace the EGR guide tube gaskets, If you don't, some high-temp RTV will suffice (copper).

It's possible that the tube being that clogged threw 0302, yes.

I hardly had any buildup when I threw the code. I cleaned the sensor attached to the pipe, and the code has not reappeared. I would try that also, easiest>hardest.

I kept getting the EGR DTC 32 on my 95 SE even after having the tube cleaned. Replaced the EGR & canister control solenoid valve and the problem went away.

My P0400, 0302 cel was solved by replacing the EGR solemoid valve ( green Connector ). I replaced it, but took apart and cleaned the old one and now that one is working fine too. Easy to clean, only one moving part inside, a spring and 2 O rings. Hard part is taking it out and putting it back in. So save some money and try cleaning it first...david

The valve itself, or the guide tube?

For the guide tube, the writeup is on the very front page of this subforum.

I believe it can cause the code. The sensor plugs in the side. I did NOT replace my gaskets because I did not get solvent on them.

I have taken comprehensive pictures and typed out advice on how to clean it but first I have to get through 15 posts. Look for my new thread on this topic.

Sorry to bring up a old thread. But how much is a typical cost to get the EGR Valve cleaned out? I would do it myself, but no time.

Mistertone: I replied in another thread which said:
I went to the dealer today to see how much they would charge to clean the EGR. They advised me against it since I don't have any codes (I have 144,000 miles on it with no codes but noticing little acceleration, so I wanted to get it cleaned).

The dealer claimed that it's a tight spot and other things may break..bla...bla..bla. After I insisted on a price, they quoted me a few hours (maybe more if something breaks) @ $90 a hour (yup this is in Canadian funds).

I then went to the pieces department and I got a quote of $300 just for all the parts (TB/IAC gasket, EGR valve and Solenoid). The EGR valve was $250!!! Yikes.

So I figure that if the dealer were to do this job it would be around 3 hours of work ($270) + parts ($300 -I'm sure they would not hesitate twice to replace the parts = ~$600 + taxes = $700.
