Has anyone been able to do this? My 97 Max has 82K on it and those bolts are real rusty and I would prefer to not take them off.

Any help would be great.

If you don't take it off, you may as well sell the sts and cut the stock one!........However if you really wan't the sts, you'll need to remove the cat. Just cut it off if you don't wan't to fuss with the rust and buy an R.T. cat!

from all the pics I've seen 4th gens are pretty similar to 3rd gens in this respect and I installed my STS pretty easily without removing the cat because teh bolts were really rusted on

Just remove the heat shield above it and slide it out the side. Also, remove the bolts in the rubber cat hangers to get a little more room to work. Wait till the car cools down and go for it

It's not that bad at all, just very messy

 

nah, screw getting a new cat, you can take it to your local muffler shop like Midas and have them put in regular bolts, it will cost you around 20-30 depending on how long it takes. Just tell them why you want them to do that and they should be cool, cause they are not removing a working cat.
