What involved in replacing exhaust?

Got a 98 with 161k and I know the flexpipe is pretty bad. Any ideas as to the costs? I expect to replace the cat too :-( thanks!

you can get a y pipe for under $200. Warpspeed has a package which includes a y pipe and high flow cat for $285. If you want to go cheap you can just buy a test pipe for like $30 off ebay.

Thanks! I scheduled an apt at the Stealership for tomorrow and I stopped off at Midas. Midas is going to run 500 from the flex pipe back which includes cutting out and keeping the cat. I just don't know if I should go after market muffler/resonator. Any suggestions?

IMO, unless you want a loud exhaust, go for an OEM or OEM replacement muffler. They don't add any power anyway, so getting one is purely form (and sound) over function.

holy smokes. We get all that done for under $200 around here. Muffler and resonator included IIRC....

So if I understand this correctly - if I go with a Midas muffler, I'll get a 'noisier' sound upon accelleration? I'm not interested in making more noise in the car.... I got a quote for an OEM muffler which was $240. YIKES! I just might pay that since I really don't want any 'whining' ;-) THANKS!

IIRC, the economy Midas muffler won't be much different from stock, just a generic comparable to OEM. If you buy their performance muffler it will be noisier.

The midas one would be what I referred to in my earlier post as an "OEM replacement." It's basically the same (albeit not nearly the same quality) and will not make it louder.

When you say "aftermarket" muffler, I (like many) would think you're talking about performance mufflers (Cattman, OBX, magnaflow, fartcans, etc).

YIKES - Just got back from the stealerships. They are worse than I thought. I could go into the details, but in short: I was quoted $3400. More than double what I thought it would be. I think I'll be heading to Midas for the repairs. I was thinking of getting the resonator and muffler OEM but the cost is out of this world!

did you actually bother going to a small exhaust shop to see how much it would be?

There are not many of those shops around Northern NJ or if there are, they are not in my neck of NJ. I also have state inspection next month and see a major decrease in gas mileage. I'm assuming it's from the leak in the exhaust and evaporation of fuel.....

Go to the local forums and see if anyone can do it for you. That is outrageous, you can buy a newer Max with what they quoted you.

For that price, you'd better get a happy ending.

Not in my opinion, no way. Why would you go to the stealership? You should expect crap like that from a dealer .... is anything cheap at a dealer? NO!!!! Plain and simple. Lots of good suggestions here ... look into a small shop to do the repair work .... will be much cheaper and you'll be helping the 'local' economy.

You really need to learn to for a thread title as well. Just gotta razz ya .... hehehehe Hope you can get it fixed for cheap! G'luck!!!!
