Old video from 2001. 97 Maxima SE 5 speed vs. 00 Prelude 5 speed, both have bolt ons.

I was bored, so I went through some old videos from 2001, and found a ton of old Maxima.org track meet footage. Matt, if you are watching this, I have plenty of your car too. I will add more if anyone is interested in the footage.

Anyway, here is my old 97 SE 5 speed with JWT pop charger, Cattman y-pipe and custom exhaust, versus Ed's 5 speed Prelude, with intake, exhaust and VTEC controller.

Matt (aka 96Sleeper) was the videographer.

Haha, awesome. That was a pretty good launch, too. Nice and smooth.

Hope you worked on those burnouts though.

Hey nice video! I was wondering if the Max would actually hold off the Prelude considering the similar power/weight but nice ending

Can we beat those gayludes stock? Same power but whats their weight to power ratio? And do they have better trannis then us? (for racing that is)

It is a great drivers race stock vs stock. I have seen the 97-01 Lude run low 15's stock. From a dig though the Maxima has the edge due to the torquey nature. The prelude is better from a roll due to the peaky nature of its engine. The prelude traps in the 92-93MPH range vs the 90MPH traps I have seen for a stock 4th gen 5spd.

I completely agree that it's a driver's race, they are very well matched in the 1/4.

However, the trap speeds you quote for a stock 5spd 4th gen are very very low. Well driven 4th gens trap in the 92-93 range stock, (which incidentally is what the driver of this car in this video trapped stock if my memory serves me correctly). I wonder he also had a prelude vtec (that's where his screen name came from) so it would be interesting to know what he trapped in that as well when it was stock.

My stock 96 trapped 93.2mph at it's highest (I only had it at the track once before I modded it, and that was in the summer), and my stock 95 trapped 94.7mph at the highest and trapped 94+ on multiple trips to the track over the years.

Thanks for the correction. I have seen alot of 90MPH traps for stock 4th gen 5spds but you are probobly a better driver than most with those low-mid 90's traps. Nice trap speeds on your 4th gens!! Is the 95 a faster year than the 96? Is it OBD1 vs OBD2 or another reason?

They are both OBD2 (even though OBD-II was not mandatory until 1996 model year, Nissan made all 95 maximas OBD-II compliant).

I'd attribute the trap speed difference between both of mine to the fact that the only time I ran my stock 96 max was my first time at the track, ever, and it was also much warmer than it was the times that I went to the track with my 95.

I only ran the Prelude VTEC a few times stock. I want to say that it trapped 92-93 at Atlanta Dragway. With a lot of bolt ons, I was averaging 97-98 mph.

My 97 Maxima trapped 92-93 stock. With only 3 bolt ons it trapped 96-97 best. They were very closely matched, but the Maxima was much easier to launch.

To the guy who asked about the launch, if I remember correctly, I was launching from 3,000-3,500 rpms.

Those were some great times!

just to add on the prelude front i have never lost to a prelude, every time i have ended up running one i can always managed to beat it, last one i ran was almost full bolton and he was shat on(this is with my current mods and my headgasket being blown aswell), when i ran one stock for stock it was a damn good run, VQ top end and a smoother powerband works in the 4th gens favor.
