my car missed 3rd gear??

so last weekend i was messing with a civic and went from a 2nd roll went to hit 3rd hard and the shifter went into gear but the trans did not? pushed clutch back in and let it back out and it was in 3rd gear. this happened once before but i thought maybe i just missed the shift but this time i made sure the shifter was in place. when driving normal 3rd gear goes in fine it only does this when i try to hit 3rd hard what could be causing this??

one more trans related prob i noticed that the base of my shifter moves around quite a bit why is this? the part the "ball" pivot mounts to moves back and forth and side to side is that normal or is something broken down there?

also when i put the car into gear i can push the shifter further. like if i put it into 1st easy and push the shifter goes further up but still stays in gear then when i pull back to 2nd it goes into gear and i can still pull it back about 2" and the shifter will stay there until i push it forward again.

or you put it in wrong. the shifter should not have play in it, unless the clutch is compressed. if you put it in yourself, you may have messed a few things up, just take it out again and reassemble it. check your shift linkage, something may be loose down there affecting the looseness of the shifter and when you go bang out third it doesnt connect right.

the linkage on these cars is about idiot proof and i know the trans is in right. what parts could be loose or warn to allow the pivot for the shifter to move? i know a member on the org is selling polly shifter bushings are these for the 4th gens? if so what part of the shifter does it mount?

Check the nut on your shifter to the shift linkages. Mine completely fell out once and I got stuck in 4th gear (luckily close to my house). If you had the shifter out, or even the shift rods, you could have a loose bolt that is causing the play in your shifter, especially if you installed a short throw with your transmission.

ive never had the shifter out and the car had a gettho short shifter in it when i got it (he cut the shifter handle down with a hacksaw). and i dont think a loose nut would give me 2" of play in the shifter. its not loose play but i have it. like when i put the shifter in 1st gear then i can push the shifter further into gear then the same thing when going into 2nd. although when i push it further into gear the ball moves where the shifter mounts to the floor.

i just replaced the trans because the old trans had the input shift bearing go out in a way that it broke the case. im not sure about milage but i think it was only about 70-80k

Hmmm i c...idk man but the linkage for the 3rd gear might be goin or somthin within the transmission might be goin...i would advise that u go back to the mechanic who put it in and see about a warranty...even junkyards give u at least 60 days to return defective items...i recently replaced my tranny and i had a 90 day

but seriously, Check the linkage, if it felt like it went in gear but did not grab and you have no grind of any sort, Its not going into the gear, My guess it that when there is stress in the drivetrain it scoots forward not allowing you to engage into gear

it did the same thing when racing a suzuki swift gt on the way home. then he pulled a big oops 3-2 shift when trying to hit 4th so i did not feel so bad lol.

u may laugh at the swift gt thing but his bro has one on 15 psi of boost and he stuck with a porsch GT3 on the way out there. letter it turned out the porsch had work to it and the driver was a F1 driver from france he was very impressed with the turbo swift.

It's broken because you were street racing.
