Honest question: dealer spoiler installation...
Honest question: dealer spoiler installation...
Honest question here - I truly don't know the answer;
When I bought my car, I wanted to add the rear spoiler. They didn't have one in stock so they said they order it. They did, and advised me that while they were charging me $200 labor to install it.
The question is: is this normal. I thought that if you bought an option with the car when new, it was put on as part of the deal. I could be way wrong. I asked the sales person at the time if it would make a difference if lumped it in with the purchase price or paid when it came in, and was told "no".
I'm not pointing fingers - I've never had something like this done and I simply don't know the proper etiquette.
Another quick question: Is $200 a little steep? How much work are we talking about here? Again, I really don't know.
Thanks for any advice you can lend !!!

It sounds to me like you should have insisted they take care of the installation and cost of the spoiler without charging you a dime. Basically, you would have portrayed this as a deal-breaker and they would have most likely relented.
I had worked them down well enough on the deal. I was happy to pay invoice for the spoiler; I'm just questioning the installation charges at this point.
Edit: OK, I found the thread. Looks like there are holes involved

The problem is that I have the car
They didn't have the spoiler in stock at the time of delivery. The $200 charge was discussed at the time I signed the papers, and as I mentioned, I did ask if including it in the purchase price as part of the deal would negate the install charge and was told 'no'.
I may try to haggle the charge - I don't think its a 2 hour+ job for guys who know what they are doing and have the tools, but I don't know. Maybe it is.

I had my spoiler put on by the dealer after I bought the car. They did it for $400 including cost of spoiler and labor. The tech took about 2-3 hours to put on and yes they do have to make 3 drill holes in the trunk lid to install. It is not peal and stick. I would not advise installing one of the OEM spoilers on your own.
Here is a copy of my invoice when I had it done. It fact they gave me 15% off for buying the car at this dealership in the first place. Tell them you bought the car from them, and if they can't give you a decent price similiar to mine then go to another dealer.
Well, I dropped the car off yesterday for something else and asked them what the price would be for install. They called me at home after they dropped me off with a price HIGHER than what had initially been discussed (which was too high to begin with!). $549+ tax
I took the quote here, and got another quote from another local dealer. They came in at $450 installed - not great but I didn't even have to haggle. So I called back my dealer and broke it down for them, and the proceeded to try and convince my that the other was cutting corners and not including parts. They offered to leave the cover off and not install the weather stripping to save money, and the offered to knock $25 off of the remainder!!! So... I call the second dealer and confirm that it's all part of the quote and its all included.
Ugh. Just frustrating. It's amazing that in the face of irrefutable data, they refuse to budge. I suppose its their prerogative; it's their business and they can do what they want. You'd just think that they would want to snag the business when clearly others are finding a way to profit at somewhere around $450.
Even though I shouldn't, I'm calling back today and talking to my sales person. She should at least know the deal. I do like her, and I'd like to throw whatever I can her way. If she can't help, I'm out. I'll either have the other dealership do it, or I'll spend the money on a Blinder system
Edit: And yes, I realize I'm whining over $100, but it's principle at this point

Sounds like you are getting screwed around after the sale. Not uncommon.
Did the sales person flat out lie to you to make the sale? I don't get where the price went from $200 to $549!
Also, I installed the spolier on my 07 SL and it was pretty easy. Drilling the holes did cause some pucker, but I measured about 6 times and drilled once to make sure everything was square.
You may even find some members here that would help with the install over some beers or something.

The original quote was for $500+ tax for everything. I thought that was high, so I started shopping at that point. When it bumped to $549, that's when I really started to push them and shop some more.
The part that upsets/concerns me the most is that they were crude enough to implicate the other dealer for shoddy work. I don't know the other dealer from Adam; maybe they are sleazeballs, but at least they gave me a straightforward quote that was $100 less and said "drop it off any time - just call...".
It's like they can't get their heads around the fact that I'll drive 15 minutes to save $100 (possibly more) so they're just sticking to their guns. Maybe they just don't want the work because they feel it's a PITA and they'd rather not do it to begin with. That is entirely possible.

I got the dealer to throw mine in and they just added $300 to the financed price. When I went to get it put on after it came in they wanted to charge me $250 for the install. I flipped and got the Dealership manager on the phone. Left the car at the dealership and told him that i would not pick the car up until he agreed to do the install for nothing. I told him congratulations you just bought back a new Maxima for $250. I also threatened to file a complaint with every governing body I could find. 20 minutes later he agreed to do it on the cuff. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Just complain and fight for what you beleive is right.
How was the install as far as removing the trunk cover, drilling the holes, etc.? Did it come with the tape?

Well, you did get 15% off, which most of us won't get. Basically it looks as if my Ca. quote is $50 more than your quote. I also have 9.75 sales tax in my area. I have found that parts vary in different parts of the country and Ca. tends to be higher. That is why so many people buy outside of Ca. for stuff. However, then you have to factor in shipping so sometimes it is a draw.

I think if you bargain hard enough especially if you bought the car at that dealership, there really shouldn't be a reason for them not to give you a 15% discount in my opinion.
I plan on getting this done soon. I'll update on what kind of quote(s) I get.

I bought a 2010 S, so naturally the first thing I wanted to do was put on a spoiler. The dealer said they would order the parts and install it for $525 + tax---obviously I said no! So I ordered a painted one via eBay for only $100 (which includes the Bing.com cashback discount) and it looks great. I went back to the dealer and was told it would be $225+tax to install---so I spoke to one of the techs (outside of work) and he'll do it for $100 next week. So for a grand total of $200 I'll finally get my spoiler installed. Not bad at all.
I should add to my comment above that I would have installed the spoiler myself but the tech said that it's a pretty "tricky" install and you have to run the wire a certain way---like Nissan does---and tap it into the third brake light else if there are any electrical problems in the future, Nissan may claim that you voided the warranty by running shady wiring---don't know how true that is but I didn't want to take the chance.
i dont know about u guys but i think 2 center stop lights look very stupid.....and i think u should just get it on ebay and stick it on....there should be 2 scews but how hard could it be to drill it then sscrew it?
I would have went with a stillen spoiler. Do that instead of paying that much for an oem unit.
And it is not hard to install an OEM spoiler. The techs at the dealership have a template they use to know where to drill the holes. It does not take 2 hours for that and at most 30 to 45 min. Plus the spoiler has double sided tape on it.
IMO i would not pay the amount some people have paid in this thread.

Anyone familiar with this company? They appear to have a spoiler for the 09 Maxima for the LOW LOW price of $99

I called my dealer yesterday about the spoiler and installation would be $452+ taxes, that's after 10% off from the parts manager because i purchased my car from them. way too much and can i really trust people drilling into my trunk and not mess it up? Very hard decision because i regret not getting it when i bought it! It just looks good when i see other new maximas with it on...

I Ordered from the dealer after I bought car..$380.00 out the door..Love it
