to buy or not to buy

ok so i found a max on craigslist yesterday that they claim it is gonna cost too much money for who ever to get their license back so they just wanna get rid of the car. i checked out the car without them knowing last night and now im wondering whether or not i should pick it up. let me know what you think

95 max white with black heated leather 5 spd. bose
they told me the only issues were a tiny bit of rust underneath the door, and sometimes you have to wiggle the key to get it started (dont know what that means, maybe ignition switch or just a new key?)

when i checked it out there is a very small bit of rust starting in the rear passenger wheel well but probly at the point where a light sanding would fix the problem, and it looks in the driver seat (although im not 100% sure because it was dark) it looks like two pretty large rips along both shoulder parts of the driver seat.

now in the add it says that the car runs EXCELLENT, it has about 170k which dosnt really bother me but other than that it looks to be in good condition. no cel

i talked them down to 600 cash tell me what you think. even if i didnt end up keeping it would it be worth to just flip anyways. im sure i could make more than that.

Buy it ...

You can fix the wiggling the key with a $30 part from pepboys, autozone etc ... It's called the ignition switch ... and about 30 minutes.

Here's the write-up for the ignition switch: http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...lots-pics.html

The rust, you can get it fixed, or not.

so i had somebody else call cause im at work today to find out about the seats if they were really ripped. they said that they were a little. the rust they said was underneath the door was really in the rear wheelwell (just a little bit of surface rust could easily be sanded down. the only thing thats confusing me is on all the adds posted and when i talked to them they say that the reason for selling is because they just got the car and its gonna cost too much for whoever to get their license back so they would just rather sell. when i had somebody else call they then said that they had the car for 4 months instead of the 1 1/2 they told me and they are selling because hey husband passed away.

when people start lying like this and start changing up the story is when i get a little iffy about it. but im still thinking and i have until 3 oclock to figure it out

Ask for the vin and run a carfax if you haven't already.

Worst case scenario ... If the car isn't in as good of shape as they say you can make money on the rims, 5spd swap kit, and the leather should equate to more than you paid ofr the car. Or you could buy the car and donate it and get a tax deduction at the end of the year.

agreed, for $600, it's really not a bad deal. I have the problem with the ignition and it's an easy fix. Seems to be a bit of a problem with nissan's? I'm guessing it's caused by people with heavy keychains. The rust is not bad, easy sand/ grind down.

I would jump on it, worse comes to worst, you can always part out and make even more money than you bought it for.

only thing i would say if it this is going to be your only car, to drive around with, i might thne give it a second thought?

i dont have a car at the moment but also dont really need one. i live close to work and dont really go any where else that i couldnt just take my wifes car. just at this point something seems incredibly shady with them switching up stories all of a sudden. i have about an hour left to think i dont know

If you're skeptical. Don't make a rushed decision. Pass.

if I had $600 to spend, it'd be sold already. i say buy it. keep in mind, no titles for cars over 10 years in RI. make sure you get proper paperwork if you do get it.

how did you know the car was from RI? strange.
but anyways dont think its gonna work out. i talked to the guy and went to his house to get the car and for some reason he wouldnt answer the door. i knocked over and over and no answer. then i get home with multiple messeges on my machine asking when i was coming. so i called and they said that they were waiting around for me forever. so i brought up the fact that they are telling different stories about the car and now am recieving some nasty email telling me to stop playing games and take the car or dont. dont know where this is going

im finding alot of 4th gens on craigslist for under a grand, i had another one last week that was 600 too that was gold with black interior but i think it was an auto which i really didnt want, plus the fact it was gold. im really looking for a black 4th gen and def nothing with that multicolored tan interior. just got in contact today with a 97 black max with g35 wheels for 1250 but we will see how that goes. this one is also in RI and im really not having any luck with anybody there, they all seem to be insane but we will see

I'm from RI and I had seen the ad on CL. I'm always looking for stuff under $1000, looking for demo derby cars. I seen you are from New London and that's not far from RI.

For $650-$300 dollars you're getting a great deal as long as you have the tools, space and time to work on any surprises. I would pay special attention to the transmission and timing chain because they are hard to fix without a shop.
