H&Rs with stock SE struts

ok, i have tried search, and can't get a straight answer... will my SE shocks and struts last a decent amount of time with H&Rs or not? i want to lower soon, but dont have the $ now... it wont save money to do it all now either, im doing it myself anyways... please let me know what your experiences have been. (they have about 50,000 on them now...)

Thanks, HAll

97 se with 59K on it now, about 4k since lowered. The only time I worry about the stock struts being shot is when I hit large bumps at about 120. In normal driving, they've never been an issue.

I started out with Eibachs and stock SE shocks but the shocks didn't last over a month. No dampening in the rear. It got bouncy and felt real spooky driving on the freeway. No use paying twice to have it installed.

Hehe...

I've had SPRINTS on stock struts for 2 months now. They are the harshest, 2.0" drop springs, but I haven't had a problem. No creaks, no leaks, no broken parts. My installers did an EXCELLENT job, and I would definitely refer them to you were you in the area. They made sure everything was done right and even put piping on the top of the springs so they don't rub in the perches. Anyways, like I said I have had no problems with Sprints (for about 4k miles), but I do fear something happening when I hit a pothole at 110+ MpH. But if I can do Sprints, I'm sure you can do H&Rs.

I ordered H&Rs a few days ago, I have 51,000 on my stock shocks but cant afford new ones right now. The KYBs are $380 from Greg but the Tokicos are only $300, are the KYBs that much better or will I be happy with the Tokicos? Id rather put on shocks too instead of just the springs.

I have a 97 with progress sprot springs and the sock se struts. Thay have been on for about a year and a half and have no problems whatsoever. My max had 36,000 miles before the springs and have 88,000 currently. The stock as doing a great job for me.

Yeah i think i'm goin to stick with my stock SE struts. I think they will hold up unless you hit a hole goin over 100 and i doubt i'll be goin 100 ne where down here. If they fail then i'll get replacements, but if they are good now then they will hold for awhile, might as well use them up.

even if the oem struts last, the ride is still not firm. Doesn't the car still float around corners? maybe if you drive like old ladies around town, springs with oem shocks would be ok. or if you like a bouncy ride.

Change the struts!

Put KYB struts in there. AGX's or GR2's My H&R/Stock setup didn't last that long. The front started to get a bit bouncy shortly after the install. The car only had 35K on it when I switched over to the H&R springs. Wound up taking the whole thing apart again 2 months later to change them.

New, they're 210 or so, so 145 isn't bad, as long as they haven't been cut. Mileage with springs usually isn't an issue. If you're doing the labor, why not do springs now, the weather's going to be perfect this week, and try them through the winter. You can replace struts in the spring if you think the stock ones are shot. Honestly, I don't think there's going to be very many situations this winter where you be able to use new struts to their full potential anyway.

I'll be putting my H&Rs on right after Christmas (actually having them installed, i dont have the tools) and I'm glad to hear my stock struts will be alright until the spring when I can get the KYB's.
Question: Are the AGXs that much better than the GR2s cuz the GR2s are much cheaper I think. I'm tight with cash and I'd love to get new struts, but $380 is kinda steap for me on the AGXs. Info please!!

Stock OK so far..

I installed H&R's with stock struts on my 99.5 SE about 6 months ago when it had 20K. The car now has about 25K and there have been no problems with the stock struts thus far. I don't race this car or even push it that hard so the struts don't seem to matter that much. If they do wear out, I will simply replace them.

Note: I have Eibach race springs on my Z28 with custom valved Bilsteins, so I do know the importance of a matched spring/shock setup. The stock struts seem fine for a regular driver.
