So here's the deal, my power steering fluid is nasty, it's black, so I wanted to drain it. There's no info in the Haynes about draining it. So I decide to just go down there and try and do it. Lame. I end up taking off the resevoir, and trying a hand pump to put air through the system to kinda bleed it out. I got about half of it out, and refilled with clear pretty new fluid, but the second I started up, the old fluid rushed back through to mix, so now it's still dirty, just less dirty.

Soooo...

IS THERE a way to drain your power steering fluid and essentially flush it? And replace it all with new fluid?

I believe you have to use a turkey baster and just suck out as much of the old stuff as you can and then replace it. The system was not made to be flushed, no real reason to do so, unless something else has been put in there that contaminated it.

 

Turkey baster, suck it up and replace it a few times during a weeks time.
I'm running Amsoil ATF.

 

You can pull the return line to the reservoir and put the hose end in a bucket, cap that fitting on the reservoir, and refill with new atf. Have someone start the car (old atf going into the bucket while you keep refilling the reservoir) turning the wheel back and forth till flushed. Best to lift the front wheels off the ground.

 

hah, funny, I was actually gonna go out and buy a turkey baster, but then I decided I'd post instead... ya know... cuz that just seemed ridiculous. :P

I can't really say I have a good reason for flushing it. But it's black. And it's supposed to be clear. So that's the best reason I have.

The turkey baster is stupid imho, it's only purpose is to avoid removing the line from the reservoir & making a mess, but a drain pan and brake cleaner works good for that. I prefer curts method.

 

The FSM has the steps on draining the power steering fluid. Do a search in the fluid and lubricant sub forum for more information on how to and the fluids to use.
