Whining when turning wheel and accelerating

The whine increases when I accelerate up to about 5-10mph and disappears when I go past that. The whine is also there when I'm turning the wheel and not accelerating.

A few months ago I had a severe high pressure power steering hose leak. The resoviour would empty itself in 2-3 days. There were times where I drove a small distance while the resoviour was empty and I had no extra fluid. Is it possible I damaged the pump? No mechanic thinks it's a big deal but it's bothering me.

Thanks.

Driving with an empty reservoir is definitely not good for the pump or steering rack in general.

But before condemning the pump, make sure the fluid is topped off. Also, jack up the front end and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock a dozen times. This will bleed out any air in the system.

Fluid is full. Tried what you suggested as well. Nothing.

If I'm in park and i keep the RPMs around 1.5-2k the sound will be amplified several times while turning the wheel

Pump still works, just noisy. Up to you whether it is worth replacing at this point. It will go out at some point.

If the pump doesn't leak or bind up, you can just live with the noise and keep driving the car for the time being. The whining will get worse in the winter, though. The pump will eventually go out but you can save up for it.

Some guys have complained about a whine having developed when the high pressure hose was replaced with aftermarket and not OEM hose.
