Tranny stuck in third after emergency stop

Has anyone had anything like this? (Please don't flip me off with "get the codes" my check eng light doesn't work and I dont have a code reading machine )
I was driving about 50 when some pendejo in a SUV decided to turn across my path to go into a 7-11. I had to do a full emg stop and missed the ****head by inches.
Some way down the road I discovered the car will only drive in third gear or reverse. I got up to 60 in third and when I took my foot off, the RPMs dropped immediately to tickover so I assume the lock-up isn't working. Pulling away from the lights in third is not fun. Sounds like a serious one?
Anybody?

your car is in limp home mode.
i know on the 3rd gens if you leave the car off for at least a minute that clears the LHM.
if you had any codes your O/D light would flash.

sounds like something came loose inside your trans and slid where it should not be. to fix this problem you have to go as fast as you can in reverse and slam on the brakes again like you did the first time. if it does not work the first time try again but go faster and hit the brakes harder this time!

Man, I am glad I got a manual transmission.

I had a situation where one of my cars whouldn't go higher than 3rd in an auto....the only thing I could do is trash that 500 dolla car and get a different one.

For your trans not getting out of gear....definitely something shifted in the trans. Great opportunity to do a swap to a manual trans. I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle with questioning my trans is working correctly or not.

Yeah....I'm just being a smart***...I would definitely see if you can get your trans working again.

lol wow... I believe his car/transmission is in fail safe mode which limits the car to 3rd gear only IIRC... there's a section in the FSM which tells you how to get out of fail safe mode. I dont recall at top of my head but its been posted here before.

Thanks guys I really appreciate your help. I didn't even know that a LHM was possible!
Yeah you're right - this morning it seems to be working normally again. I am still going to drop the pan and take a good look at the oil to see what bits and pieces might be floating around there. It was a really close call; if I had hit him I would probably have been deflected into oncoming traffic.

Yeah I did a full search and after a while I found one that was pretty much identical:
During the trip I had to brake quite hard which resulted in the car sliding for about 20 ft before it came to a stop. Anyhow, when I started moving again I noticed the car was sluggish when starting from a stop. I check to make sure that it was in gear (D) and the hand brake was not applied. All seemed fine. When I got on the expressway I noticed that the overdrive didn't engage. The car was in 3rd gear all the way home

turn the car off for a minute or so.When you turn it back on, it will run fine.
I've had that experience a few times after intense snow drift sessions
