Yo guys,

I jus saw a used 2002 BMW 530 w/ 140k miles for $5k.

Idk guys. I love my maxi...but we talking BMW here...

 

dont do it...biggest mistake you could make...how many miles on the max tho??

 

I got 160k on my max now...i bought it for $2K w/ 150k miles in March 2009. Had to replace the 5spd tranny. Cost me 1200 bucks for the tranny, labor, and new clutch. So I say i paid $3200 for the car. Not to even mention all the mods lol.

I wd still mod the BMW with aftermarket intake, glasspack, dynomax muffler, & tints. even tho they are hard to mod I hear

 

IMO I wouldnt.. BMWs are too expensive to maintain and parts are expensive.

 

dont buy an automatic BMW, they are sluggish and heavy. the only one i would get is a a 540i 6spd, but thats me.

plus 2002 is still a almost 8 year old car and will seems out dated compared to the new bimmers.

 

My friend just got a 97 540i auto and that thing hauls ***. I have a 98 5spd max and sometimes i wish i had an auto, until i downshift and step on it

THe 2002 530i's weigh 3400+ lbs and come with a 225HP (214 ft-lb) V6.

If it was an earlier model i wouldnt even condsider it. But i read online 0-60 in 6.7 secs with the 5spd.

O and did i mention that the BMW is a 5spd.

If it was older then or slower then i wouldnt even consider it. But its a 5 spd BMW and a 2002. Granted these things are a PITA to work on (my boy has a BMW and it looked to be a chore to even change the plugs or do an oil change).

Im jus so torn....i love my maxi and i kno it can run with the 530i. THe 540i or M5 would absolutely eat my maxi tho

 

Come on guys, this has NOTHING to do with the 4th gen Maxima.

 

listen to this man... i had 2 540i's in my lifetime. if you can learn how to do the work yourself. it's very affordable. and it's a monster and a half. but i'd suggest anything from 01+. anything before that yr expect to have problems with the car.

ooh and also... people say it's not possible to install a quad exhaust because the lack of room from the spare well tire. you can easily mod this to make room. i took a sledge hammer and banged it up a lil just to make the room i needed (didn't even effect my spare well tire). i bought 2 magnaflow exhausts (wish i remembered which kind) and installed a true catback exhaust system with all 4 exhaust pipes sticking out like a M5. and those exhausts i bought, alot of people thought i upgraded my V8 to something larger. No raspy noise nor ne thing else, just straight beast.

i think its a legit spot...who better to ask then fellow 4th gen owners...and seriously dude dont do it...waaay to expensive to maintain...

 

Im an avid DIY. But i looked at a coupla BMWs and they looked like a major PITA to work on. Plus finding parts and finding a mechanic to do all the repairs i dont feel like doin. ( I dont have a car jack and i hate using the factory jack unless ABSOLUTELY necessary).

The maxi is easier to fix, jus as reliable, and jus as fast. Granted its not an 2002. But if i found a 2002 maxi it would prolly be a lil more expensive than the BMW. Which raises another point...a person is sellin the car and not a dealership. A BMW in good working order cost at least 8 grand

But i posted in here cuz i have a 4th gen....and i know the other generation owners would add a whole other element to the discussion that it would really start to become too complex and opinionated on a car i dont even own ...

honestly its getting up there in the miles and its only guna go downhill from where its at,those cars are so expensive to maintain its sickening. but if u have the money/patience to keep up on it then its well worth it. IMO i wouldnt buy it at all not because im so obsessed with maxes but more so i know how those german cars act when they get some miles on them. id keep ur eyes open for something else and ur wallet closed unless ur gaga about the car. again thats my opinon

 

That would be the I6. No 5-series has ever come with a v6. They make v8s, v10s, and v12s, though.

i definetely understand, it is a bit more of a PITA, but i did all my work myself and i had absolutely no knowlegde of cars. Literally none. but i decided that i really wanted that car therefore i went for it and knew the only way i was able to afford it was if i did the work myself, i learned how to change headgaskets, condersors, radiators, oil change (i didnt even know how to do this lol) brakes rotors, calipers, etc... n simple upgrades to better my vehicle, i learned all of this thru BMW forums just like i learned so much about a 4th gen max n still learning. but i'm a maxima owner now, even though BMW has my love (2002 BMW M3 [Crashed] =/ ) i have to admit i love my max. It's not as monsterous as to what i used to have, but has great potential, it's cheap, and most important of all.... so much easier to work on. it all comes down to wether you want to put in the extra effort

 

a 140k bmw? no thanks.

 

The only 2002 5 series I would / you should consider would be the M5 $$$$$ lol

 

A tempting deal on that 5-series, but as others have said, the maintenance costs will astound you.

Well if I could afford one I would. They handle a lot better than our maxima's, and they're RWD. I'd go for the 540i 6spd.

 

Thanks guys...I have my answer. I would like to have BMW, but im not payin the money to maintain it. German cars do go to crap after awhile. I knew that already.

Buy one then sell it before it starts to go to crap. My uncle goes through cars like nobody's business. He buys the bmws for his wife and sells them before they go to crap.

I can guarantee you this will be my last maxima. 6th gens are ugly and 6spd disappeared in 7th gens. Much better cars out there that i'd rather be driving.

 

yea i dont like the direction they took the maxima in.. i think nissna shouldve designed another model which would b the 6th and 7th gens. they r just too big and the lack of a manual gear box takes away part of what made maximas so awesome to begin with.. Im interested to see what they come up with next.

But i was so disappointed to hear they were no longer being offered in manual 6 spd. For that reason i would get either the 5th or 6th gen as my next car. Im eager to try that 6spd. But with only 160k mi on my car its gonna be Loooooong time before i get somethin else lol

 

I absolutely love my BMW , but a set of run-flat tires alone on this car go for about 1400 dollars installed. Unless you're in a financially sound point in your life, I wouldn't recommend owning a BMW... Give it a few years.., get educated, get a good paying career, than have some fun with your money .

No comparison in the vehicles. If you can afford it, get the bimmer.

Just be aware of the price of German parts, and the basic philosophy of German engineering "If you can hold a part in place with two bolts, use four".

Yeah, that's why they are tough to work on.

YEah Beamers are nice but too epensive to maintain. Im not droppin 100 bucks jus to change oil.

It sounds like a good deal. I would do it if it were in good shape. The maintenance costs could bury you, though...
