My '95 Maxima, automatic, wouldn't start few days ago. I then threw it in neutral and the car came alive. Thinking it was the starter so I replaced it but now its acting up. My shifter has been feeling very tight like its not fully in gear for few weeks now.

What is causing the Neutral start-up? Is it the neutral safety switch, if so, can I start my car when put in Neutral from now on and not get it fix?

Or is it the shift linkage cable?

Is there a such thing as gear position sensor?

 

Your car will only start with the shifter in Park or Neutral. There is a switch that determines when the car is in P or N. That inhibitor switch operation may be faulty.

 

Di you know the name of the device that may be faulty?

 

Fix that first, then if your still having the park/neutral start issue, replace the p/n safety switch.
