Which heavy-duty battery do you guys recommend for 97 GLE?
If you don't have a stereo system - any battery should do
If you do have a stereo system, depending on how substantial it is, look into an optima.
I had a semi heavy duty system and a battery from sears and it held up fine.

I have everything stock: BOSE etc., but it has the heated seats so winter package.... I think that means heavy-duty battery for me. I'm not sure if I'll spend $200 on an optima though. Car has 277k miles on it....
I would still go with the Optima. I bought a new battery from walmart, and I have a basic system and with the cold weather it wasn't starting up. I got the optima. I think $200 isnt bad if you divide it by the lifespan that it will last which is probably years.
DieHard Gold / Optima RedTop / Interstate is what I would recommend. I personally have an Optima RedTop (1000CA-800CCA )that I bought in 2006, at that time it was a $169.99 battery but recently looked them up and prices are up $200s
Shop around. I put a red top in my Murano on Sept 2008, and ended up paying $124 at Sam's Club. Their price was $149 with tax, less an Optima $25 rebate. Prices might have gone up since then, but I'd bet Sam's still has Optimas cheaper than anyone else.

I've had my optima red-top for going on 6 years with no problems. It did get really low the other night testing my HID's alllll night and needed a little jump to get the car started.
What are the applications we talkin here??? Stereo system or Stock.
Personally, when my battery dies i thinkin a Yellow top.
Which battery is best for a system. Does anyone have a capacitor for their system. I needed one for my 1997 max cuz light dimming issues.

I have had an Optima Red Top in my 96 for over 5 years now. I left my dome light on last night and the car was dead this morning. Put a jump box on it and it fired right up, took a charge and I am good to go. No problems. I also have a Yellow Top in my Chevy Truck more than 5 years old. You can't go wrong with Optima. More expensive but IMO, worth it.
Exactly. It's a car, you don't need a heavy duty battery. If you have a system and plan to listen to it with the car off, then so be it spend the extra cash. But otherwise a regular battery is plenty.

sorry to thread jack...but how is the 2010 MAxi?? THats a monster of a car hehe
Thanks guys, this is great feedback. It looks like amazon has them for 144-155 shipping inlcuded, so that's better than than the $200 I originally saw. Although, as Murphy would have it, there is not a rebate in sight as December is Car Battery Mortality Month.
Anyway, so there are the two redtops:
A. 35; Cold Crank Amps 720; Crank Amps 910; Reserve Capacity 90;
B. 34R; Cold Crank Amps 800; Crank Amps 1000; Reserve Capacity 110 . Do I just go for the
I assume higher is better, although I didn't see anything in the FSM about that; in the FSM, EL-27, the cold cranking current is prescribed as either 356 or 582 depending on battery. both of the reds are way above...

I have A red optima on my 5th gen and it took sometime to install because the positive cable would not reach all the way to the terminal because of the black plastic square looking piece....just so you know your gonna have to modify your pos+ cable to make it work.....I needed to use the height piece it came with also...not sure about 4gen but you might wanna look into that before you buy it and get mad that it don't fit perfect.

I'll second the Interstate batteries. I have them in both my cars and they are great, no problems, even after they died completely (left lights on). If you're running stock options, like what you stated, there shouldn't be a need for an optima. The interstate batteries run around $120ish, I think.
Kirkland (Costco) Batteries are made by Johnson Controls and have repeatedly received good reviews. Also, the autozone gold batteries received good reviews if my memory serves me correctly. Both are under $100. My last battery from Sam's club lasted 5 years in VA.
**** Optima, those pieces of siht left me stranded. It wasnt even a year old. The local battery shop I bought it from said they are junk and they had dozens of them returned waiting to be scrapped. I will never again buy an Optima.
I just read an issue of CR which tested batteries. Everstart Maxx batteries were at the top of the list. Yes Walmart batteries out scored many others. Some brands such as Interstate have good model batteries and some bad ones too. Even if the # is similar or they look similar they can have very different ratings. You are best off to go to a local battery shop and talk with them. They will recommend the right choice.

I'll be replacing my Red Top with an Odessey battery, same manufacturer that sources batteries to the military. Pricey as hell though, but if you don't mind spending the dough it's about the best available.
For more reasonable buys, I've used countless others without a problem, be they Kirkland, Interstate, CT, AC Delco, etc. Optimas are fine, their problem seems to be their failure rates so you could go through several of them before you get one that'll hold a charge. I had to exchange one within a few months.

Save your $$$ and grab a Walmart battery (just picked one up for my GF's Volvo for less than $70 minus a $10 core.) Unless you've got some serious audio in the car or a particle accelerator, you're just wasting your money.
If you guys saw the battery I had in my Max, I'd probably get banned.

Everstart MAXX. $75 3 yr warrenty and 9yr pro-rated warrenty. I bought the 925 cranking amps 800cca one and it fit's perfectly in the battery tray just make sure you grab a battery with the plastic spacer. It should be on top of the battery and just stick it under the battery to raise it higher so the battery tie-down will work perfect. There is also a 1000CA battery for the same price but it's a tiny bit bigger and will probably sit on top of the tray rather than perfectly in it. Look on the battery's label as they sell sevral for the same price. I have a 1000w amp and 12" sub and I no longer have my lights flashing or dimming and the car starts and runs better as well. Interstate is rated #1 and Everstart Maxx is rated #2. So for that price you can not find a better deal.
