Great idea for a rear drag suspension setup!

You use two cables to fully extend your rear shocks. This allows no weight transfer at all. The rear doesn't squat at all. This is a track only setup though. The rear will have no travel and rattle your teeth out if you drive on the street over bumps.

A lot of the grand prix/impala/regal guys do this and have reported some great increases in 60ft times!

Here is a how to (right off of clubgp):

Here are the pictures for the rear suspension kit. Everything was bought at Home Depot for around $5. I bought 6' of steel cable and the cut it to measurement. Has extra left over and the two clamps. I don't remember the size of the cable. I think it was 3/16".

In one of the pics, two holes have to be drilled on the body frame and the the two on the strut. Then the cable comes up through under the car and then clamped tight.

Car must be jacked up.

Here is one guy's timeslip with an impala and his outlook on the mod lol:

R/T...1.627
60'...1.480
330...4.732
1/8...7.441
MPH...91.56
1000...9.784
1/4...11.770
MPH...111.72
Cable mod + slicks = amazing!!

I think I am gonna try this when I finally get some good tires.

wow.. 1.4 and 11.7

id still like to see his mod list,.. im guessing a few of the items would be a really small pulley..cams ..and some serious comp management

or better yet..what he ran w/o the cable mod..

I don't think this will work for the 6th gen since the GPs have a coil-over type setup in the back. You'd have better luck trying to find a set of drag bags that will fit.

I honestly have never thought of the use of cables before. I have locked my two front spring perches together with cables and that worked pretty good until the cable eventually broke after a couple years of having the cables on my car.

I currently use about 6 rubber coil spring spacers in my rear springs. It works pretty good at jacking the front end up.

Here's how my car sits right now:

Jime has tried using hard plastic boat trailer rollers, drilled out the inside so it slides on the strut piston. Then he removed the spring completely and had a fully locked and fully extended rear suspension. He said he didn't noticeably see a difference in his 60 foot and it was much safer with a little give in the rear.

I have a couple boat rollers I picked up a couple years ago. I haven't gotten around to tinkering with it since. But, I will probably mess around with my suspension a bit more when I'm ready to spray the 75 shot next Spring. Until then, my 1.9s NA is about as good as I'll get most likely.

Yeah, it might not work. I have to look at my rear suspension.

If you have coilovers all you have to do in the rear is preload the springs so the back end is really stiff and won't squat. I'm still planning to try some sort of tie down arrangement in the front to prevent lift but even without that I've still pulled 1.73 just stiffening the rear (on slicks of course).

Yeah. I have adjustable Konis. But you have to remove the strut in order to adjust them. And you can only adjust stiffness for rebound, not compression. So I'm thinking about stiffening up the front struts to prevent lift on the launch. I use to have cables, but they broke shortly after MAXUS and I haven't bothered to put them back on yet. My 60 foot won't be better than 1.9 until I start spraying nitrous. Then I'll need to play around further with my suspension.

I personally didn't notice any difference in my 60' times the two times I tried running with blocks to reduce rear squat. My best (by far, actually) 60's have come with no additional changes to my suspension at all.

Interesting. I'm under the impression right now that I won't get better than 1.8s until I get some new struts. These 130k stockers make my car squat more than you'd want for a RWD... lol

yeah, the stock struts at 50k used to squat like crazy on my basically stock car, I cant imagine how bad it be pulling 1.8 60's

Regardless of whether or not this will work on a Maxima, I've done this on my buddy's turbo Buick Regal many times and it DOES work. He's making 500+ WHP/TQ and running slicks, and is able to pull consistent 1.8's and usually 1.7's as well. This guy is definitely no drag racer, either.
