Brake Problems

I have a 99 Maxima with 43000 miles. I have had it back to the dealership twice now and for brake problems. They replaced the pads and turned or replaced the rotors.

I am now having promlems again. When you apply the brake to slow down, the brakes pulsate and vibrate. I took it in to the dealership last week, and they said that the rotors were warped again, but it was not covered in the warranty.

I drive fast, almost all the time, but most of it is long hauls along freeways.

Has anyone had similar problems??

I was wondering if the slotted and drilled rotors would make a difference?

yeah, i got my brake padss changed 6 months ago, and then got new rotors 3 months ago... now my brakes vibrate too & the mechannic who put the rotors on looked at them and said all was ok! i disagree ... do i need new rotors too? my pads are still like 50% i HATE that feeling when i apply the brakes and i don't know what to do next. org member "gotrice?" said if it's time for new brakes he recommends uprgading to new pads & brake lines, which i may end up doing - but did my mechanic hose me? does he owe me a better solution?
thanks in advance for any help - i'm off now to search the archives

Re: Brake Problems

i have a 99 too, i have 50k miles with the same brake pulsation. i'm going to change my pads and resurface rotors tomorrow. will see if it helps. i drive normal, so it's not your driving. i read in the 5th gen forum, it could be a poorly designed brake system or poor quality rotors.

Make sure that the hubs are within factory specs (around .003"). If they are not, then it'll cause the rotors to warp prematurely.

also make sure that the lugs are torque 72-87 lb-ft in a criss-cross pattern. When I get my wheels/tires balanced rotated or if I drop my car off for inspection, I leave a torque wrench in my trunk and make sure that the lugs are torqued to my specs (I do 75 lb-ft) before leaving. Yes, I'm **** and probably over do it, but at least my rotors never warp

Why? Never heard of any service with no warranty, unless they can prove it is your fault.

torque lug nuts

i do that also, i torque my lug nuts when ever someone else puts my wheels back on. i don't trust those mechanics using those impact wrenches on my lug nuts.

I have a 99, at around 27K my rotors had to be cut. Nissan would not wrranty them either. Cost me 60 bucks. I now use a torque wrench to torque the lugnuts. Rotors have been nice and smooth ever since. I will be upgrading the entire brake system this spring. Probably get the kit from gotrice. It's worth the $$$ especially if you drive hard, your probably going to go throught the OEM rotors pretty quick.

I have a set of Brembo cross drilled and slotted rotors for the front if anybody is interested. 130 plus shipping and you can have them.

I think Nissan's have pretty good and longlasting brake systems as compared to other Japanese cars (Mazda especially). The RX7 has the coolest engine in the world, but also has the worst, shortest lasting rotors that warp all the time. My old Protege had to get new rotors very often because they kept warping... So be thankful that Nissan brakes are relatively good.

Re: Brake Problems

I have replaced all 4 rotors and brake pads.

I even went out to Sears and bought a torque wrench and torqued them to 75 ft lbs.

I will just have to wait and see what happens now.

Thanks all for the tips.

I just replced mine with brembo cross drilled/axxis pads. I stop so smoothly, I was actually hoping for more bite on the brakes but am so very satsified.

Re: Brake Problems

my brakes just started pulsating, it got gradually worse in the last few months. i don't drive fast, brake hard or race. just changed pads and resurfaced rotors. so far so good. it's only been 4 days now. it feels much smoother than that damn pulsation feeling. stopping power has not changed.

well thats good, right. If you feel that you want more grip in your brakes I would try porterhouse? brakes? Those are supposed to have the best grip for the daily drive.

Once the rotors are warped, it doesn't matter - you can turn them, but they will warp again. It's only a matter of time. If my rotors warp, I save myself time and money and just replace them.

I've had rotors cut and had them last for a good time. It's that cut rotors will make warping easier to come back(due to less mass than before) but it doesn't necessarily make the rotors automatically warp again.
