Audi headlight mod...

Im looking to do the Audi headlight mod. i talked to DTFstock and hehas the Oznium flexible strips. I also saw that Max0224 has them but he has no writeup and im not sure on whathe used to do his. http://forums.maxima.org/members-rid...-new-pics.html

i also saw StormzUSMC had them but again no write ups. was curious if anyone did this and have a writeup on it. dont need on how to take the headlights apart just kinda how you installed yours and what you would do different..

I'm pretty sure MetalMaxima did a write up...check the stickies, maybe? It's been a while since I've seen it. I'm pretty sure after he baked the headlight, he just superglued some LED strips in flush and then ran some wiring.

The only difference is he did it on a set of 5th gen headlights. But I imagine the concept is pretty similar.

I did it the other day.

LED strip had a self-adhesive backing.

Found a good spot for it, removed the paper from the back, and just stuck it on. Spliced the wires into the corner light, and that was that.

Nalc, did you use the oznium strips or who did you go through. looks good too. im not to worried about installing them although i would like to see how others attack it. im more interested in if leds burned out, flickering and any electrical nightmares. i have had my share of burnouts and such and it really does get old quick fixing the same problem 2, 3,4, 5 times.

if u wire them good to the parking lights and use heat shrink tubing and have good connections u should be fine and wont have flickering. depending on the quality of the lights will depend how long they last. ive been debating doing this mod, if i have to open them in 4 months to put new strips in then its just not worth it IMO

Well, the pic is Autozone LED strips from the ricer aisle.

They're sealed waterproof strips with SMD cool white LEDs.

What I did for the guy's car in the pic (Maximus681) was we removed that 8" strip of rubber molding on the bottom of the hood, and put the LED strip on the outside of the headlight lenses right there. I wasn't sure on the reliability, so I wanted to make them easier to swap.

That being said, opening the headlight is not difficult after the first one or two times. Bake it at 250 degrees for 10-15 minutes then it just comes off. It's a very pain free process as long as u grow a pair. Don't listen to those wimps who say 200 degrees, leave the door half open, and do it for 3-5 minutes. That's how you end up breaking your headlight housing because you had to force it off. It comes off so easy once the glue has been properly melted, which takes 10+ minutes at 250 degrees.

i was actually planning on picking up a pair from there too, its true once u open them its not hard at all just gets annoying. ive had mine open a couple of times, i think im guna grab the ribbon strip ones i had tried a clear flex strip and i couldnt seem to get the look i was going for with the thickness of the strip so i gave up on it, could also try to go under the headlights in between the head/bumper. this thread kinda put some spark into it again

Also have considered head/taillight mod. I want to put the projector/led strip in my 01 housing, dont want the 5.5 headlight and ive only seen one other person like that(if anyone has more info on that pm me plz)

I plan to do this mod in the near future, and here is another option if you're like me and don't want to open the headlight. Oznium sells a side-emitting LED strip that you can lay flat and the LEDs come out of the side. They're really thin and fairly bright...

http://www.oznium.com/side-emitting-led-strip

Neutral white matches the 4300k HIDs the closest. I bought a small strip of neutral white and cool white and cool white was too blue. The nice thing about these is they are so thin, they can be placed in between the bumper and the bottom of the headlights. It really looks like they're in the headlights anyway.

Just wanted to share. I would only open my headlights if I got a good set of angel eyes. I hate the prices that Umnitza charges, but people who have them seem to like them. I guess it would be better to buy them if they're that good instead of a CCFL ring that might blow a month or 2 later. That would really **** me off.

Viperboy i would like to see some pics of the install outside the headlights. im in that same boat if i dont have t oopen the headlights thats a major plus for me. i have opened them 2x before but im not sure how good they will seal after having them opened up 3, 4, 5 more times. Placing them inside seems like it would be a nicer look but would def like to see them on the outside

Good find.

I looked at the pictures on the Oznium website, and those strips are the same exact strips as the Autozone ones that I posted about. They could fit above the headlight lens, under the hood if that rubber strip is removed. They could probably fit under the headlight lens too.

They are the cool white. Not sure how much they cost... my friend picked them up and I just helped him install them.

Here is another... the grille ended up blocking part of them, since the headlights are aimed in a little bit. But we were able to get them to fit the hood by removing that short rubber strip.

Ok, so after looking at this thread TODAY, I went out and bought the autozone version of the audi LED strip, like $20 for two strips.

It comes with test button to see how they look like and connected them to my corner lights. Took about 20 mins.

The strips are barely noticeable when the hood is closed(the strips are on the outside on top of the headlights with 3M tape) and it actually looks nice, kinda like a eyelid...looks aggressive...here is the outcome...

this is actually white, somehow came out blue....

*cough cough*

Different car but same idea

http://forums.maxima.org/members-rid...nkies-gtp.html

Right now, I'm thinking I'm gonna buy another set of headlights and do a projector retro and LED mod again, but this time with the LED strip take out every other one so there is not so many, they get too close together and you can't see the individual ones

BTW

They are linked on this page...thats where I usually buy mine

Maximus, About how many inches long is that? I was thinking on opening the ligths and putting it in there but seeing that its a black strip i think it may be really obvious, But at night when there are lit i think it would look nice. Maximus, Is that strip flexible in all ways so you could curve it around the front from the parking to the low beam.

BTW Drunkie, it seems the link to where you buy them isnt loading fully.

It's about a foot or so? Maybe 10-14 inches? It is pretty flexible in certain directions. In my pic, it was able to bend that corner at the top inner corner of the headlights pretty easily. It's not as flexible in the other direction, though.

Did StormzUSMC use the same Oznium/Autozone strip? If you see the way he has it curve by the parking lamps, then the Oznium strip will be difficult to bend in that direction around the parking lamps. However, in the direction that I bent it, and that MaximusMorpheus bent it, the Oznium strip is very flexible.

I hope that makes sense. Some strips are flat and have the LEDs pointing to the sides (the Oznium one). These are good to curve around the top and bottom of the headlights.
Other strips are flat and have the LEDs pointing upwards, so they are good to curve around the corners of the headlights like StormzUSMC has.

Drunkie,
Is this the one you put on your GTP.
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...ecs%2FWFLB.htm

I think the way it curves around your headlights is what i need. Like Nalc said i dont think the autozones will do what i need.
Also are you happy with SBL service and the way the leds work. Any problems?

It's 24 inches total, so two 12 inch Flex strips...they bend nicely...

They are waterproof so don' t have to worry about the rain and the 3m tape will hold them in place...durability issue is what I am wondering about...they look good though...

I will try to take some day pics as well to see how bright they are in the daylight...I love the real Audi lights, everytime I see one I turn my head to glance!

Drunkie how did you hide the white strip and lettering so it wasnt so visible. i was thinking since the inside of the light housing is like a grey color i would get some grey paint and cover everything but the leds. do you have any close up pics of them in the housing to see what the strips look like installed.

Quick side note... I'm going to order some stuff from superbrightleds.com and I don't want the LED lights in the brake lights to give me the light on the dash...

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...2Fflashers.htm

Will the one that says japanese work on our cars?? I have a nice list of stuff, just want to know if I need one of these or something else for the tail lights. Thanks.

Plain and simple....black sharpie

I have mine under the housing shroud, I think IIRC the 5.5 lights have enough...especially with these to squeeze underneath.

I'm pulling these out of the car...

I actually making completely custom headlights now for the car, projector retros, a different design with the LED strip, Iron Man mod...everything in the front of the car is getting rewired.
