speedometer stop working

just out of the blue, went to pick up some dinner, and it just stops working. i was looking at the MT FSM, and i did not see any speedometer cable? I would think there would be one? my first thought is that it snapped, or became loose?

thoughts, ideas?

I'd say your best first bet would be to just pull the cluster and check for a loose connection. Usually the case. If not, maybe the motor for the needle.

Is it just me, or have you been having quite a few issues with your Max lately?

Well, okay, yeah, you're right. That's not bad for 8 years.

Did you get the ABS issue resolved? I remember seeing your thread.

could be the speed sensors.. Mine failed and the ABS light turned on and the speedo stop working..

Otherwise it could just fail, I believe the speedo is soldered in.

Actually, this was what I was thinking. But I wasn't sure if the speed sensor for the speedometer and ABS were directly tied or not, that's why I didn't mention it.

i would guess either vehicle speed sensor or something happened in the cluster. I think i have a spare 02-03 cluster lying around if you are are interested

I put my money on the sensor though, i think it should be throwing a code

Same happened to me when I installed my headers, Forgot to instal... Well not sure what cable it was but it's right up there near the fan. I caught it smacking up against the fan yesterday because the clip it was on snapped somehow.. Luckily I caught it just in time before the whole line snapped. I'd check that.. Maybe same thing happened but it ate through it..
gl man..

its not the speed sensor, apparently when you pull the abs fuse you lose the speedo as well.

the abs problem is also gone. yippie for me..

i have a 4th gen maxima and my speedo started quitting and the car would not shift until i tapped (or "beat") on the dash over the cluster w/my hand, it will then start working again and shift? i replaced the cluster with a low mile used set and fixed the problem for a week and it started messing up again (until i "beat" on the dash) any thoughts?

You realize the vehicle also captures your mileage in the ECU right? If you ever go to sell that thing to someone you may have an issue...

I think i'll have an issue selling it either way. Nothing on the car drivetrain wise is original anymore. If I ever get rid of the car, it will be parted out.
