Need your opinion people

I am going to be changing my oil soon....the question I have is that last time I changed the oil...I decided to use a Royal Purple extended life oil filter (good for 12 K)....I will be doing the oil change at 4K....

Do you guys think it would be okay to just leave the filter in for another oil change interval....or should I change it out.....

I have always changed the filter out at every oil change when I was using OEM...but since this is an extended life filter with >99% filtration efficiency...I was just wondering.....

Let me know your ideas.... thanx

Personally I would never leave an old filter in place while filling up with fresh new oil, I don't care how long they say it is good for it will still be full of junk that it is already filtered. Doing half a job will only net you half the results your after.

You can leave it but for the price of a new one it sorta makes sense to replace the filter. The other problem being that the filter can hold a massive amount of oil. Dirty oil that is....

i use amsoil filters that are supposed to be good for 25k. I change them every 5k with my oil.

I have heard of people changing the filter and leaving the oil in, but not changing the oil without the filter.

In other words, just change it.

just change both every time. it's oil don't waste money on fancy filters and oil neither will matter in the long run. well it'll matter to your wallet that's about it...

wow....this RP filter is worlds ahead of the OEM....I have about 3500 miles on the oil right now....when I checked the dipstick today...the oil is still clean....I know for sure it would be pretty dark at 3k with the OEM.....definitely worth the money.....

I would be hesitant to leave either in and just change the other. However, I would change the filter and keep the oil, before I would change the oil and leave the filter. No matter how good I thought it was.

Changing the oil and leaving the filter...why?

Why even change the oil? Keep it for another 4K and then change oil and filter, always an option.

well....just changed the oil today....put in a new filter....you guys are right.....although the old filter was still doing its job well...(oil still looked good for 5K miles on it)...its cheap insurance and peace of mind.....I took a sample and will be sending it to Blackstone for analysis....for the last oil change I sent in a sample and they recommended going to 5K change interval....we will see how it goes....i will post results when I get them......

Update.....reviving an old thread....

Quick stats: 02 3.5 with 110k

Well after a couple of oil changes (5k, 5k and most recently 3 k)...here are my observations.....take it with a grain of salt

Using 2.5 Q of Castrol Syntec mixed with 2 Q of Royal Purple (all 5w30) with RP extended filter....noticed that the filter did its job well....after 5k oil was still golden...looked like I could easily go another few k' if I wanted to (confirmed by Blackstone oil analysis)....car ran smooth with minimal change in engine tone/roughness at 5k -----used this formula for 2 oil changes

Went to using all RP oil on the last of the 3 oil changes....noticed engine was smooth for the first 500 miles or so....and then the tone of the engine got louder and didn't feel as smooth as it usually does.....by 3k...I couldn't take it anymore....oil still looked golden....but i think what they say about RP shearing quickly must be true.....changed the oil at 3 k and decided to ditch RP oil all together with this oil change....went to using Pennzoil Ultra Synthetic...now here is the kicker...

So far I have had this oil in for about a week and I love it!!! .... the car runs very quiet and exceptionally smooth.....quite noticeable....I decided to go with PZ Ultra after reading posts raving about the PZ platinum and how good the UOA's are for our VQ....

Wanted to let you guys know that this oil runs great in our engines and that the RP extended range oil filter is a great filter....
