Oh wow my rear fenders have gotten BAD. Need bodywork.

The rear fenderwells of my white car have decided to start getting crazy rusty. Bubbles have shown up, and the metal on the inside lip is flaking and cracking.

I live in NY and have to drive the car in harsh weather. I do my best to keep it washed, but I think this winter I was unable to do so as much as I'd have liked.

Now the car has paid the price. It is most definitely going to require that some metal be cut out and replaced.

Has anyone here had to do major repair/replacement of this area of the car? What am I gonna be looking at in terms of labor and materials? This doesn't look like a job for bondo.

For what it's worth I know the pearl white paint is pretty expensive too... but I thnk the repair shop that did the deer damage fix still has some left over.

I'm heartbroken that the rear fenderwells are looking so trashy and are getting worse by the day.

It's too late for this car now, but something I learned on a past car is that just keeping the car washed is not good enough. You need to get under the fenders with a hose and blast out all the crevices -- next time you're next to your car, reach your fingers under that lip where the fender curve is formed and I bet you get a handful of dirt buildup.

Keep that clean and it's like an apple a day for rust.

So like $1k... dang. Well, that's food for thought, and something to plan for, as the car is still being paid for and we want to keep it well-maintained.

What do they end up doing to fix this? Do they cut out a panel and replace? I'm unfamiliar with this type of body work.

..

This is funny, I'm in the EXACT same position. I have the pearl white, I bought the car 3 months ago, so beginning-mid winter. Lots of salt on the roads up here in Toronto. I drove the car, also didnt wash it as much as I should have I guess. There was NO rust when I got the car. Now it looks like rust has taken over that inner lip. I want to get this fixed, and I wouldn't mind taking it to a bodyshop, instead of sanding/repainting myself, which would just allow it to come back say another year from now. I'm very surprised at the quote for $1000. If I get a chance I'm going to go get a quote and get mine fixed, if its under say $400. Good luck man, for some reason I think this only plagues the pearl white maxi's.. I don't see any other 5 gen maximas with rust
