To Turn or Not to Turn...
To Turn or Not to Turn...
Rotors that is. My Max has 85k on it with aftermarket pads about %50 worn that squeal. I bought it with 82k so I suspect they might have been turned once or twice at most by now depending on how long front pads last on an auto. I bought dealer pads and can't decide whether to turn the rotors or not. They don't really shake now under hard breaking but the shop said they recommend turning them with new pads to get a clean surface and he said that if there was any vibration with the existing pads it would be worse with new ones w/o turning. 1. Would it hurt for me to just put the pads on and then if shakes, have them turned or would it be too late. I just don't want to pay $80 to reduce the life of the rotor unnecessarily. thanks!! btw, getting 4 new Kumho Supra 712's put on and an alignment done the same day...
2. Will the new tires make a difference on whether there is any vibration under hard braking?? i.e. should I just get the tires done first then test the hard braking to see if rotors need to be turned or don't factor that in.
sorry for all the questions.

You don't have to turn the rotors if they're still in spec. The shop is trying to sell you a brake job. That's a popular misconception that you need to turn the rotors when replacing pads - it simply isn't necessary if the rotors are still in spec (and have no deep grooves, blemishes etc.) and have no lateral runout. As a matter of fact, a lot of automakers these days are going to the trouble to actually recommend that you DON'T turn the rotors unless it's necessary.
Well, this is bound to start an arguement...
