Overheating / no revs past 4500rpm

Hello everyone, so today is about 105 degrees. I stopped into best buy and I come back into the car and my needle is on the last line before H. The temp does flutuate with driving, the harder the higher the temp rises but never actually hits H. The whole time the temp needle is above normal. Also with this overheating issue the trans feels like it's in some sort of limp mode, it doesnt want to go past 3500 or 4500 rpm, even with full throttle given. The car feels like a snail, slowly picking up speed. Any one have any ideas on this? There are no check engine lights. The car will go to the dealer tomorrow probably. Thanks everyone.

you need to have a flush , new coolant and the system needs to be bled

the reason you wont go past its because the car is in safe mode , when the temp sees above normal operating temp it was take extra precation for you NOT to overrev the motor and blow a head gasket

in the moring when its cool , pop the cap , see if you got any coolant and top it off..

then with the cap off , turn the car on and leave the heater on , just the heater and no A/C

wait for it 10-20 mins until you see bubbles from the cap, thats how you bleed the air out of the system.

Also visually check if coolant has spew from either the upper or lower hose onto the engine bay, look for green dry wet spots, also check the neck of the plastic radiator if its cracked.

this would save you some money before going to the dealership UNLESS its under waranty

I like how lately on this board and several others, owners use the phrase, "it's a lease"

Over heating 08 maxima sound like more then just air in the system you might want to have that checked to see if your fans are coming on cooling the system

Nizmo you were right, the overflow coolant was low so I added some antifreeze. Thanks!

Keep an eye on the level of your coolant in the overflow.

If it keeps getting lower and lower, obviously you are losing coolant, most likely you have a leak......

upper radiator hose clamp (at the clamp furthest away from the radiator).

let us know how this works out.

I noticed in Nissan's, over time they lose coolant, not leaking or anything they just lose coolant, I've also noticed this in Toyota and Lexus vehicles and several others, seeing how the CVT has 2 extra trans coolers on it, it is of no surprise it lost more then the average amount, but it's normal for these cars, it's not a leak or a problem, just keep an eye on all the fluid levels every 5K

I was always under the assumption that the cooling system in any car, is always a closed system.

So if you are having to top off the coolant, and there is no air in the system, that coolant has to have escaped somewhere.

Either a loose clamp, loose drain plug, small crack in overflow bottle or crack in plastic tank on top of radiator............

Or worse head gasket problem... (out of the exhaust, or up through the overflow bottle)

My 04 Maxima would always have an empty reservoir bottle, no matter how many times I topped it off.

Then one cold day I noticed coolant at the top hose clamp, furthest away from the radiator.

Did a drain and fill, 50 % oem nissan coolant, 50 % distilled water, replaced both hoses, all 4 clamps with regular stainless steel hose clamps .......

bled the air and problem solved !!!

Coolant reservoir always sits at the same level.

My other car is a Lexus LX470 always sits at the same level, and have owned an 86 Maxima, 90 Stanza, 95 Maxima never coolant loss except the 95 Maxima (head gasket)

Only car that actually had a leak was a 97 Altima, never actually found the exact location of the leak but it was in reservoir bottle, guessing it had to either be the top clamp or bottom clamp, but the car was traded in cause it was at like 100k

Now of all the other vehicles we owned plus close friends, I can say without a doubt coolant evaporates out, and these cars are always parked in the same spots, the coolant never dropped like it was leaking out but over 5-15k you could notice it.

I don't view this as a problem, since over 10 cars have exhibited this same trait

The problem is back, but the car isn't overheating. It happens anytime over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. It's a little different today. The engine regarding but extremely slow. I'm assuming its the coolant temp sensor or maybe a related sensor. Any thoughts?
