Changing my TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)

Anyone with experience changing a TPS please weigh in.

So I just pulled a code that my TPS is bad. I already found the link that shows how to replace it then I popped my head under the hood to see how things look.

I looked at the screws and they appear to be round and for a flat head screw driver. I can't really tell though because there is so much oxidation. Are these screws really a pain to get out?

Also, how difficult is it to position the sensor so it reads properly?

Just trying to figure out what I am getting myself into. Any insight or tips are welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

The screws do have a tendency to cam out. I had to use a pair of vise grips to get one off. I think they're Phillips, though. I'd go in with a screwdriver socket on a short ratchet, so you can put a lot of pressure on the screw and still turn it. IIRC, it isn't a big deal to set it. I think this is the current updated procedure: http://www.lyberty.com/car/Maxima_A3...NTB99-053b.pdf

Spray the screw heads down with some PB Blaster or equilvalent. That should help anyway. I never had trouble with mine coming out, but that's not saying others would not. I have an extra TPS on hand if you need it - PM me.

DBear - good call on the TSB find! WooT

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll get the PB Blaster ready.

Just curious, how long are these screws?

They're about 3/4" long.

Be careful with those phillips headed bolts. I shredded mine so I replaced them with hex headed bolts.

This is what I am worried about. How did you get them out after you shredded them?

I got those bolts out with screw drivers but couldn't get them firmly tightened again with those partially shredded heads.

If they become stuck to the point you can't grip them anymore, dab a bit of quick steal (epoxy) to the head so you can grab a hold of it with a set of needle nose pliars. Should work. Also, when you go to remove them, push hard against the screwdriver, this will hopefully prevent it from spinning the head off.

G'luck

Use the feeler gauge method to set it properly, after the new TPS is installed.

What's the "feeler gauge" method?

I was basically planning on centering the holes where they were before. Is this a good start?

How did you end up changing your TPS? A code came up for mine and I'd like to know exactly how to change it! Please reply or email (jonshivprashad@yahoo.com)

Its located on the TB. Jus remove accelerator cable and TB.

But afterward, i think u need to "calibrate" it. Dont quote me on that tho, but i kno there is somthing u need to do after install. SEARCH, there is a thread about someone who replaced theirs.
