Easy Dead Speaker Fix (Front R&L)

Hello so I've been having a dead speaker in my passenger side for a while and decided to take the door panel off to see what the problem was and whether it was the speaker or the wires TO the speaker.

So after about 30 minutes nothing looked wrong, all the wires and connectors had continuity, 12V and ect.

And NOTE! Although I chose to solder mine, you have to be REALLY careful, I almost caught my speakers on fire by accidentally touching the iron on the paper material and also its REALLY magnetic and it sucked my soldering iron to its magnet when I was being careless. also you will see a couple scratches on the bubble thing in the middle of the speaker, that is what I did when I couldn't figure out the problem and decided to stab the hell out of it and that was when I found out the solution

So long story short I found it was the two wires that are hot glued to the speaker when I took a little pick and pried the glue off, and touched the wire to the other little wire sticking out on the side of the bubble thing my speakers came ALIVE!:

So I tried to re-hot glue the wires together and it was almost as frustrating as doing the KS with giant hands. And I ended up breaking part of a wire off, and so it was too short to reach the little thing sticking out. So soldering it is!:

So as of 9:30PM my speakers have been tested and they do not sound like crap! WHOO! I thought that material from the speaker that I ripped off when the hot glue didn't work would make the sound...well... sound horrible, but it is all good. And so I hot glued everything to keep the solder and junk in place.

And you've just regained your speakers functionality for the grand price of ZERO!

You fixed your crappy factory speakers? Seriously, cough the cash to replace them with some quality speakers.

I don't mean to rag on you or anything, but honestly I think if you take all the time to pull the door apart, then you may as well put a quality speaker in there.

Haha I don't know why people complain about the factory Bose speakers so much I think they are perfectly fine in my opinion. I've been in BMW's, Lexus, and just about every Toyota you can think of, and their sound system still doesn't sound as good as Bose.

Maybe its the way I set my bass, and treble, or whatever but I like my sound system.

And also I don't want to spend the time wiring up new speakers and all that stuff. I just want to have sound on the passenger side of the car. In addition, I don't have the money to spend on new speakers; hence, the write up!

Everybody wants to be a hater. Nice write up, why spend money if you don't need to.

My factory speakers rattled when it was on, so I opened up door panel and found out the paper cone was broken, what I did was to replaced the factory speakers with two component speakers and I had to drill two 1" holes on the A pillar (on door side) to mount the tweeters, I also replaced the back speakers as well. Later, I replaced the head unit (the factory crappy one without CD) with a Walmart one which takes USB and SD card, overall, the mod is much more satisfying. Sound a lot better and I never need to pop in CD any more, just load up hundreds of MP3 songs to USB or SD card and it is good to go for hours. Very glad I did that without spending a lot of money, I was thinking to add a sub, but for the type of the music that I am listening, I really don't need to.

The factory speakers without bose are horrible. I've never heard the bose system in a Maxima, but in every other car I've heard it seems to be pretty good.

I replaced my stock speakers in the front with components as well, except I cut a 1 1/2" hole in front of my door handles (instead of the A Pillars) to mount my tweeters. Makes wiring it up that much easier, and I believe some years of Maxima's had them located there if they had the bose system.

Side note - when you are taking off the front doors be careful for the big block of foam near the armrest. I've knocked it off of both sides and tried to glue it back on but it never stays. If you put it back in without being fully attached, it will squeak and probably drive you crazy. I finally just took it out. Not a clue what it was there for in the first place

Maybe it was 1.5" hole, I can't remember, I should say that the hole is on the door panel not actually on A pillar, it is located at the corner of the window where there just have enough space to accept the hole. I replaced the stock speakers with polk components I got from Crutchfield. I can say it is better than Bose, but my Titan comes with Rockford Fosgate speakers and they are very good, bass is more satisfying than Polk.

Yeah, the bose are far from crappy and is enough fro the average music listener. I needed a little bass so I install a super smalleer 10" sub in the trunk.

A huge difference between the money I wasted on my Buick. @ 12" running at over 1000w RMS and a Bad *** 4ch amp running the cabins.

I know! and this is my first contribution to the 4th Gen section too

But thank you for the support! Its awesome though, I thought there might be a couple threads already about this fix but I couldn't find any when I searched and so I was super excited about making my first DIY

I don't know if this is just me, but I find it extremely awesome when I fix something instead of replacing it. Like before I didn't care at all about my speakers but now everytime I get in and turn on the music I get this warm feeling inside. Its probably because I knew I could have lost a chunk of change if I didn't find out about the wires. LOL

SiathLinux was the only person who brought any negativity to this thread. You guys? You all? Don't make it worse than it is.

Nice repair. It doesn't really matter what it is or how much it costs, the gratification of knowing you fixed it yourself is worth the trouble most of the time.

Haha well its been a day or two since I fixed it and I blasted the volume all the way up and it seems like the solder and hot glue is holding things together!

So yeah thank you guys for bringing spirits up! I am going to keep tinkering with things to see if I can find another easy fix for a potentially expensive problem.

I wasn't meaning to flame - nor did or state that the speaker he repaired was BOSE... and although my car is a GXE - it didn't have the factory stereo when I got it (honestly, I don't like the speakers or the stereo that is in my car - but I'll live with it for a little longer).

I'm sorry if anyone took my post in a 'negative' way, I was stating my opinion.

Thanks for sharing Leo. I have a friend with a dead speaker problem, and this just might be the fix for it.
