Hello. I have a question regarding certification on an 06 maxima. My dealer has told me that it is optional coverage that costs around 1400, only to extend the power train and ensure title cleanliness. I was under the impression that certification was free, and if nissan wants to sell the car certified they will. Is my assumption wrong or is the dealer lying?

I know there is other optional coverage called "wrap" or something and that does cost extra.

Any info is appreciated.

Well I asked them if they would be willing to certify the maxima because it falls within the requirements. As of now it is not certified so would I have to pay to get nissan to certify it?

 

I believe certifcation is when they go over the car and do a so many point inspection and charge you extra for it. If the car is on the newer side and has lower milage and is under warrenty still for a while than the dealer is just making more money from you for nothing. Just do a car fax and make sure the maintenance was properly done on it and the brakes are good with the tire too and you should be ok.

 

The certification does include a 155 point (I believe) inspection. It also comes with special interest rates, towing coverage, trip interruption coverage, etc. It's a 7 year 100,000 mile warranty from the original date of purchase. It also comes with a $50 deductible.

There's more to it than just a warranty as you can see. I would pay to have it certified IMO. If you can get the car certified for $1000 I say do it. Also have the dealership give you a brochure with all of the details on the certification.

BTW, I sell new, used and certified pre-owned Nissans for a living.

 

The dealer is really not trying to scam you...they have an acv(actual cash value that they put in the car) when they go to certify something, the mechanic has control of what will be replaced to make that car as good as new and this can run up the acv of the car...this is normally passed on to the consumer...now it shouldn't be anywhere close to 1400 but our normal cost to certify was around 500 bucks, hope that helps
