Walked by Lightning, but got respect...

I'm off work this week so I'm running around finishing X-mas shopping. After dropping off a few routers to an associate at the Benz plant in Vance, I head to the Galleria mall. On the way on I-459, unknowingly, I pass a Lightning with my cruise set at 80. I soon notice his lights are in my ***, I mean he's really in my tailpipe. This scared me at first since it's raining today.

So I pull up and over to the next lane. He cruises next to me teasing me to run. I don't bite for the first minute and a half, but his persistence got me.

We're off three different times pulling up each time we come close to traffic. Each time, he walks away considerably, but never leaves completely. During this, I of course, pass my exit. It's okay, I'm off today anyway.

We run twice more before he motions me to exit off on Hwy 280. We stop and chat and he tells me he heard about the Max with FL plates after a buddy of his told him about me running close to door to door with him twice in his Z28 SS. He heard it was mad fast.

I then let him know that was when the SC was in. Shocked, he says, "You don't have it now?!?" He said he was REALLY shocked that I hung as well as I did with all the mods he had. He said he never heard of such a big family car with a NA 3.0 V6 running so well. He has kids too so I had to give a full tutorial of my Max after all of his questions he asked.

Hate to be left by a Ford, but at least I was complimented and he now wants to find one for his family sedan after knowing how it runs NA and hearing how it runs SC'd.

They are serious HP machines. My cousin just dynoed his L stock & modded.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....6&goto=newpost

He put down over 350rwhp in his 99 L stock.

Even on a 100 shot i get beat pretty bad.

What is the top end on a stock lightning? Doesn't aerodynamics play a big role at 100mph+

My thinking also. Thanks I knew someone has some hard #'s here. So this person has 170 more WHP than the maxima and at least that much more torque and only walks a na maxima?

You know I wasnt' there to say yes/no but there is just too much hp/torque differences here.

Well, according to my cousin, he has no problems getting up to 140mph but then after that, he said it takes a while. After 140, the aerodynamics take toll on him. That is the speed he usually gets walked but im not sure how much better it is now considering he is pushing 50 more rwhp since stock.

I would say 8-10 carlenghts. What I don't know is how much he lifted his foot off the throttle after he realized I wasn't with him each time until traffic came up.

Hey, I see where some of you may be going...

I got SMOKED (or sprayed with water; ha-ha) each time. The point I was making was that after the running, he was still impressed with the Max running 130+ enough that he would consider getting one. Especially, after my arguement of having all the luxuries, lots of interior room, nice sized trunk, good gas mileage, vey low maintenance and maintenance cost and most importantly, entry price.

As he said, didn't want to or couldn't pay for a 5 series Bimmer.

Hehehe well a bone stock 2k2 6spd Max can go over 140+ easy! The Max still holds it's own on the highway!

380HP. And over ftlbs ? Did you mean pound-feet ? Well, it puts out over 365lb-ft. of torque.

That thing is a MONSTER. A friend of mine has one. Beautiful trucks. Sounds amazing.

A 5spd Supercharged 4th gen max should run in the low 5's 0-60, and I firmly belive should be equal to a lightning. A N/A max would, however get walked.

With those mods you have, and the 5spd, I am surprised he beat you by 8 car lengths!. I was under the impression 5spd Max's have a considerable amount more grunt on the highway than automagic max's...but I am told that lightnings have great highway speed so WHO KNOWS!

Equal? Far from it. The new 2k and up has at least 20 more hp then the 99's which my cousin has. No S/Ced 5spd Max runs low 13's unless you are running a lot of boost and have mods out the ****. Now, if you want to compare modded for modded, no max will ever compare. I am running 100 shot & basic mods on my Max and i still get walked by Lightnings. Im not trying to flame or anything but the Lightning will always be faster regardless.

I am a big Lightning fan and on their F-150 board. People might want to check out some of their times. 12's w/ an extra extra mod to two and that is just insane.

The main point here is that he got respect from a lightning owner, that is almost if not as good as "hanging" with one.

Very true.

But a supercharged 5spd max with basic bolt-ons will be even with a stock lightning.

I'm glad to see someone sees my point here. I've been considering selling my Max for a little while. But truth is, I love the car. It has treated me sooooo well. I've NEVER had a problem with it.

Can't think of a comparable vehicle for the money with this much room, good fuel comsuption, good speed, handling, all the creature comforts (including REAL seating for 5) and virtually no maintenance!

Well, i know alot of the stock L's are running low 13's. My cousin ran 13.3 stock in his 99. Now the 2k and up have 20+ hp and extra torque so they are a bit faster. Most S/C maximas i see (in the NE) run high 13's. That is roughly a half sec diff and that is a few car lengths. I knwo they wont stay even but the will "hang". I do feel that Maximas can gain if not get total respect. I think respect is more important then winning, ss long as other car/truck owners realize that the Maxima has some potential.

Yankee, like i said, i do credit you.

I've seen it written both ways, even when describing torque output from an automobile engine.
I think ft-lbs makes more sense, because a moment is the cross product of a radius and a force. I routinely used in-lbs and N-m at a previous job. Now, I work with oz-in and N-mm. Unit conversion could almost drive a person insane.

I smell BS...

You should just get a Saab. Off the dealer's lot, top speed in the cheapest 9-3 is electronically limited (easily bypassable) to 147mph.

Saab's are slow.. they have huge maintenance cost, the parts are expensive and hard to find..

You mean 365lb-ft at the wheels, right?
Stock they put down like 450lb-ft at the crank.

Hey fella's, I was under friends username Chanman02 last night, so thats me.

Me and a few buddy's went to look at the Cobra-R today...amazing...anyways, me and the lightning kid (2001) were messin around, i am '95 auto, i was in 1st gear with the revvs high and gunned it, and then floored it and he passed me and got in front of me.

He told me the '01 lightnings do 0-60 in near 5 seconds flat. I believe it. 5spd s/c'ed max would hang but would have a HARD time tryin to keep somewhat even.
