Bose volume **** troubleshooting

Hey, all!

I tried searching for this, but didn't come up with anything. The bose volume **** in our i30 has been working erratically: turning the sound up instead of down, vice versa, and simply refusing to work (as well as the "power on" option). I took the **** out and everything seems to be normal and clean.

Any tips on troubleshooting?

Thank you!

I may still have this stock HU when I replaced it with an aftermarket...

With that said, I would just get an aftermarket HU.

Try pulling or pushing up or down while turning the volume control. Common problem on those. I took my Bose unit out, removed the face plate and resoldered the connections for the volume control, that was a few years ago. Still works like a charm. You have nothing to lose.

First you have to remove the HU. It's been a while so I dont remember exactly what I did but once you remove the HU the faceplate that includes the volume control needs to be removed. The connection that sends volume settings from the faceplate to the headunit is the problem. I took it apart and resoldered the connections. Just heat with a soldering iron and add a little solder. You really have to take it apart to see what I'm tal;king about.

Your problem almost certainly within the HU. You will probably need to replace it.

Very good possibility. I can't say for sure it's been a long time since I did this. Pushing on the **** could have caused that.

Not sure if you are still trying to fix the old one. If you are I would say take a soldering iron and heat each connection that looks like it may be running from the volume control **** and add a little solder. Just be careful. I would probably need the unit in front of me to really be able to trace which solder points are for the volume control.

those connections that i've circled are right underneath the volume **** control unit (?). i did notice with the old one in the car, if i pulled on the **** and tried turning the volume, it would work more often than not. the power function was not working, however. it does make sense, by pulling on the ****, those connectors touch and the volume works. i'll try to resolder them and most likely sell it on here. thanks a bunch, man!

i don't think i will have any way of testing it (don't feel like taking the new one out). but it does make sense. i had to pull on our **** to turn the volume. once disassembled, i pulled on the **** again and those connectors were moving with it, which is not supposed to happen. taking your radio apart is very easy. just need a small screw-driver

That **** is used to control volume and turn the HU on/off. I could see where over time if you press too hard on the **** for on/off this connection will fail.

Resoldering should work.

I had the same problem with my radio. One time i was bumping my music and a cop was next to me and i was gonna turn it low and BAM!!! it went loud. The cop pulled me over and gave me a warning. SO then i bought me a after market stereo and it works great.

I used to have the same problem with the Bose in my 4th gen. I used to have to literally PUNCH the power **** to get it to turn off. I would then drive to work in silence. Lol

I've had the car for over 13 years so don't want to replace the stereo at this point. If anyone knows where I can get that switch or has an old headunit, functioning or not, with a functioning volume control let me know.

EDIT: Nevermind I found the part

16? it's more like 20 over here (not a big deal, but still). are you using a coupon code?
is there any way to fix the current switch? (what breaks in it, do you know?)
thanks a lot for sharing this info, man. sticky?

The switch is sealed, uses miniature parts and is not repairable. It needs to be replaced. Any type of re-soldering or cleaning efforts are probably a waste of time. In did not use a coupon code. $16-$20, I don't remember exactly. Still much cheaper then replacing the entire unit.

This link sort of explains how one of these switches work. It's a little more complex than the type of switches used in the old days.

Had mine rebuilt twice until I got an aftermarket. Best thing I could have done. Just adjust for the power to the amplified speaker

Potentiometers go bad. I build and circuit-bend audio gear and tbh I'm impressed my car's volume **** hasn't gone out in 12 years because any other pot I use as much has.

Personally I'd yank a HU from a junk yard car if your city has a Pick 'n' Pull or equivalent.

FWIW The Bose and most radios nowadays do not use a potentiometer, they use a rotary encoder for volume control.
