How big is the firewall hole? Anybody knows?

I'm going to replace my hood release cable and I need to know the size of the firewall hole that the cable runs through.

Repair manual indicate to run the wire from the engine bay through the firewall of the driver side. I bought a used wire that has the hood latch and was thinking of running from the cab through the wall and to the front grille, this will work if the hole can fit only the wire. If the firewall is just an open space then maybe I can proceed according to the manual with the latch attached on.

ideas? past experience? knowledge?

I seriously doubt if the hole is big enough to fit the hood latch mechanism through. I have never looked but I would expect a hole of 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Why don't you just take the hood latch mechanism off the cable?

I'm trying to do it without taking off anything. Besides that, its a used cable, the point where the cable meets the hood latch has a bit of rust.

Stopping and preventing rust is always a good thing IMO. Another good reason to take the cable off the latch mechanism.
