I am putting bolts back in my VB and I snapped one of my bolts in the tranny. I am trying to take it out with a screw extractor and a drill. The bolt head is snapped off its just the bolt in the tranny any tips. Thanks

If you can weld...

One of my buddies took his welder and tacked a few tacks on top of one another on a bolt that had the head snapped off of it.

Once he built up enough length, he grabbed hold of it with a vice grips and twisted it free.

 

I won't be able to use the welder because I don't have one, but will a drill bit do the same job as the screw extractor.

 

I mean, you could drill it out if you wanted, I suppose. I'd just be wary of stripping out the threads in the tranny. Or drilling in too far.

I'd stick with the screw extractor because they're cone-shaped, whereas the drill isn't, so it won't catch inside the screw and pull it out when you reverse it. Just IMO.

 

I tried drilling the screw out for about an 1hr or 2 but still the success was very small and I my whole arms were aching from all of that hard drilling and constant pressure that I was applying and I have the black&deckers drill bits if that makes a diffrence.

 

JB weld ?

 

NO, I am assuming that he was talking about the MIG welder.

 

easyouts work by spinning the bolt out. regular drill bits will only push in, more.
get an easyout, and hope you haven't torqued that thing in there good using the wrong tool.

 

personally i say take it to someone who is skilled at this sorta thing before you make things worse

 

I'm going to assume you overtorqued the crap out of the bolt. I suggest using a torque wrench to avoid this kind of problem next time.

Is the trans still in the car or out of the car?

If its out of the car, I'd take it to a repair shop or machine shop and have them get it out unless you dont mind drilling a little longer

 

what/which bolt is it?

 

The tranny is still in the car and the bolt that I broke was a long VB bolt that will bolt the VB onto transmission.

 

Assuming it is one of several bolt holding the VB in; perhaps after you get the other bolts out and remove it you could grab the broken bolt itselt with the VB not in your way.

I am wondering If It makes a difference in how I am drilling the screw extractor forward/Reverse. I am looking at the directions on my black&deckers screw extractor and It's showing that I should drill it in forward than remove the drill from the screw and take a vise grip and spin it in reverse counter-clockwise.
Any thoughts. Thanks.
