Can an OEM non-Bose HU work with the Bose speakers?

Couldn't find this by searching, nor in the stickies. I guess it's probably too dumb of a question to keep for reference purposes.

Situation: I have a 2002 with the Bose audio and an aftermarket HU. The HU sucks and I hate it with an intense passion. I got a Clarion "non-Bose" OEM, Nissan HU from a 2002 at the junkyard ($15!).

Can I simply plug that HU in where the aftermarket unit is now, regaining the use of my steering wheel controls? Or does the non-Bose OEM HU have the same problems as the others and will still need the adapter harness thing that allows the controls to work? Does the non-Bose Clarion still send out the same signals as its Bose Clarion counterpart, insofar as not damaging the amped-at-the-speaker, 1-ohm BOSEs?

Basically, I'm looking for a way to use another HU that is a higher quality, and less annoying than, what's in there now; without buying the harnesses.
