How do I apply RTV to Walker flange gskt for y-pipe?

I know it's supposed to be common sense but the FSM does not mention RTV application in the exhaust section. I am replacing the y-pipe flanges.

This is my thinking on RTV application, after cleaning mating surfaces,

1. apply ultra black RTV into the flange gasket grove,
2. place gasket on applied RTV,
3. apply a thinner bead of RTV on top of flange,
4. re-install

also if I pull a stud out, is it necessary to put something on the thread before putting a new stud in?

I am not contradicting you. I am pointing out that some put the high temp rtv on there.

If your experience is different, all you have to say is "i put red rtv on mine, and the gasket blew right thru in two weeks. so it's a waste of time, but it's up to you." I don't care either way, I just want do it the way it's supposed to be done so it lasts a while.

By the way, "beginners luck," all six studs came off the Y-pipe, rusted pretty good, but they came out. Maxima 310k original y-pipe!!!

I'm not either but its pretty simple concept...even says on the RTV instructions. Put it around the mating surface of the 2 flanges...which would be the ring gasket and some of the flange itself.

let it dry for about 5 min, install it, hand tighten, and wait (not sure) 45 min? and tighten.

So I am going with the copper RTV. It's not supposed to burn off... 700F intermittent tolerance says the packaging. We'll see.

Holy cow?! Really? I have no idea what the temperature of exhaust gases is? You? I know it's blazing hot, but 700F sounds pretty heat tolerant.

There is a tendency to think putting more stuff on will make things better...

So just the exhaust flange o rings after cleaning the flange, and call it a day?
