Replaced MAF due to P0171

2001 AE 72k miles bought from fellow org member with 60k miles.

For the past 6 months and 5k miles, SES has been coming on and off. No real ill effects except occasional rough idle. I was ignoring as the light was never consistent. However, I failed my emissions and that is a problem. I called DaveB and got a new MAF in 2 days shipped to Atlanta. I replaced in about 20 minutes...(took the battery out to make it easier). Fired it back up and practiced the reset procedure I saw on the forums. 1. Ran the car for 30+ seconds without the MAF connected. 2. Reconnected the MAF but did not reset as it cited..didn't think you could anyway. 3. 4 days later, SES is still on and I've noticed the rough idle to some degree, not much... I took my car in for rear brakes and the shop checked the codes and this time cited P0100 Bad MAF. I sent email to DaveB if it was possible I got defective MAF; is there a way to tell without sophisticated equipment? I sent an email to DaveB requesting another MAF - he hasn't responded yet. Thoughts???

P0171 Code on 2000 Maxima

Hi - I'm a single female maxima owner and I'm trying to find out the truth about this code. My service engine light came on which was odd for my car because I always have things checked on her. She has 169,000 miles and is in great shape. I've replaced the 02 sensors in the past but in the reserach I've done I've found that I could throw that code if my MAF was dirty or needed replacing.

I had my mechanic do a full injector cleaning and change my spark plugs because I kept getting a little valve chatter, now I have this code that keeps popping up.

I don't want to have to spend money to replace 02 censors if the fuel injector cleaning could have caused this. Any input or suggestions before I drop some cash would be very helpful.
Thanks.

Why did you have it unplugged then plugged it? Last time I unplugged and plugged a sensor while the car was on I fried it and that's what I think you did to the maf. When I install sensors all I do is unplug the battery swap in new sensor then connect battery and turn car back on and ses will be gone, that's how I swapped in a new maf and everything was good.

might want to double/triple check for vacuum leaks.

Do the ECU reset to turn off the SEL. See if it helps:

How to reset ECU in 5th and 6th Generation Maxima's
1.
Turn ignition switch on and wait about 3 seconds.
Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking. (here is where i think you can get a code from this.)
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.

Took me three tries, but I got mine to turn off. A watch with a second hand is needed.

Update - I read that DaveB was on vacation. I called the other DaveB and he said that after replacing the MAF, you should clear the SES. I did and will wait to see if the light comes back on. I'll get my emissions while it's off and maybe pass.

It's the MAF or vacuum leaks but from my research it's most likely the MAF. Get one from DaveB for 90 bucks and it's pretty easy to replace. It would seem there are a couple versions on installing though.
1. Remove negative of battery terminal
2. Remove MAF
3. Install MAF
4. Leave unplugged and run car for 30 seconds.
5. Have shop or someone with Consult tool reset the code
6. Drive...

The other method as someone on this post said was to
1. Remove negative of battery
2. Remove MAF and install new MAF
3. Reapply negative terminal of battery
4. SES is gone.

From my research on this org site, the first method and the one I used seems to be more widely accepted for the MAF.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but who is this DaveB that people speak of and how do I contact him for an MAF? My 2002 Max has been getting low gas mileage recently and I suspect the MAF is the problem.
