Noise when releasing clutch

When I release the clutch from a standing start, I hear a "hooting" or "moaning" noise from the engine compartment (sounds like an owl). Is loudest when the car is cold, and when I'm taking off from a start, particularly when going up hill. Everything else seems to be okay, car has 141K on it, original clutch, hydraulics, etc.

TIA!

Keith

Assume you're talking about the howl.. I have not heard a 5th gen manual trans that doesn't make that noise.

Mine does too, it seems to work fine nonetheless.

Sounds like your throw out bearing is going out. Good time to have a new clutch installed considering your mileage. The clutch kit will include a new throw out bearing and pilot bearing etc. do have your flywheel resurfaced and replace your rear main engine seal while doing the job. There are transmission shops that will check it for free just call around.

Actually, sounds more like a foghorn, and only when the clutch is partly out. Worse when its cold.

I'm hoping the clutch lasts a bit longer, my oldest son will start driving in a few months, and I'd prefer that he learn on an old, worn clutch, rather than a new one.....once he learns, then we'll get it replaced, or maybe, we'll do it ourselves as a father-son activity.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

have the same thing when cold, when you release the pedal really slowly and the car starts to move, it howls a bit, asked my mechanic, he said its not a problem. my clutch has 82k on it, still good

I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep driving until there becomes driveability issues.
