What do you do about your rusty/corroded fuel filler opening?
What do you do about your rusty/corroded fuel filler opening?
Mine has been really rusted/corroded for the last couple years, even though most of my car isn't too rusted. I know it's not getting a good seal, and maybe be part of the reason for my EVAP codes. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience replacing the fuel filler neck/opening, where they got the parts and how they did it.
Thanks for any help or experience shared

When I purchased my Maxima this past March, the rust beneath/around the neck, under the cap was pretty extensive. I tried sanding and painting it with Rust-O-Leum primer followed by a nice, gloss black. Popped the cap off, cleaned it extensively, Armor-Alled the ring itself, put it all back together, cleared the code... It stayed off for, oh, maybe three hours.
Finally took the car in to do a smoke test on the EVAP system, as I was pretty sure the canister itself had ripped, and, surprise!, the neck, not the canister, was beginning to rust through in a few places. My mechanic (soon to be FORMER mechanic) wanted $300 for parts and labor to replace it. I laughed and said no thanks.
Pull-A-Part happened to have an '02 in it the next week... My friend and I pulled the neck off, the whole assembly that runs from outside the car to the tank. There are a few EVAP lines and three nuts holding it all together. It took less than twenty-five minutes (!) to get it off and out. I cleaned it up and there isn't any rust on it. Now, we're just waiting for the right weekend to switch the neck onto my car.
Cost? $12. TWELVE. DOLLARS. (American flavor) Courtesy wants something like $180 for the neck. I mean.. it's a hollow tube with some other hollow tubes connected to it. Pretty neat looking, kinda like modern art, but come on! $180 for some hollow tubes? No, thanks. I'd buy one off Carparts.com and be done with it. Seriously, the labor is super, super easy. Soak the nuts in PB Blaster, remove and reassemble. =D
