After some track time with my NOS, I slowly started to feel some of the shifting fade away. I knew at that point my transmission was in its final days. At that point I had nothing to lose with my transmission so I went inside, looked around, and did some experimenting. After 3 weeks, 20 gallons of transmission fluid and $200 in gaskets I found the right combination. That was TWO years ago. After the Valvebody changes I went almost two more drag-racing seasons and one autocross season. If you know who I am, then you know I’ve run this car hard. I just recently (August ’99) swapped out my original transmission for the I30t VLSD and I’m still using the same valvebody. It really helps increase the longevity of your automatic by reducing the slippage on the clutches.
The VB modification is performed outside of the vehicle. The modification is done by changing the inner workings of the Valvebody. This is not a NEW procedure by any means. Automotive enthusiasts have used valvebody modifications to increase the performance and longevity of their automatic transmissions for over 50 years.
What we are changing is the speed of the shifts between 1-2 and again between 2-3. That normal sloppy slow transition you experience now is fine for a smooth quiet shift (like a luxury car should be). But if you’re like me, you want every little bit of power robbing, energy-absorbing thing out of your car. That’s exactly what the OEM ValveBody does…rob you of precious power. You are losing power with every shift you make. The Valvebody upgrade will virtually ELIMINATE the slow shift you’ve come to hate. I’ve increased my ¼ mile times by 6 tenths just with this modification. Your shifts are faster than a 5-speed (and of course, you’ll never miss one). Your car will now shift firm, like a sports car should. Normal driving will show very little difference (other than a quicker shift). More spirited driving will increase the firmness of the shifts.
The Valvebody upgrade is available for $450. This includes completely rebuilding the Valvebody, recalibration, gaskets, packing and shipping back to you. There is not a better performance upgrade for the automatic Maxima, period. Here are a few comments on the upgrade from the BBS:
“ This mod is totally AWESOME!! Thanks so much Don for taking the time to do my VB upgrade and tranny cooler this past weekend. I would have to agree with Y2KevSE when he says it is the best mod for the money (for you auto trannys). The shifts are much crisper and faster, yet not harsh at all, and have been getting progressively better since this past Saturday This is an absolute MUST mod for all you guys out there with auto trannys. Trust me when I say that Don does a quality job and it is worth every penny. Thanks again Don. “

“I have run 14.9 on the g-tech thanks to Don's VB upgrade. I was running 15.29-15.32 consistently before the VB upgrade, and that's in Texas! Think if I were up north with the cool breeze in the intake....I also have a Stillen Hi-flow intake. I am going to switch to CAI and see if I get better times”

“Any 4th gen without this recal... YOU'RE MISSING OUT! Man, that thing shifts like a ****!!! When Don said it'll take about .4-.6 off your 1/4 time, he's NOT lying! I just sat in Jane's car today (first time since the recal) and the shifts from 1st to 2nd is nice and crisp. Definitely no lag at all. If you haven't done this already, better make this your next mod!!! I LOVE mine, TRUST ME!”

The process is simple. I have instructions for removal and re-installation available in MS Publisher format (my web-site isn’t up yet), or if you don’t have Publisher, I can fax the sheets to you for your review. If you have moderate mechanical knowledge you should be able to complete the process in about 4-5 hours. A professional mechanic should be able to complete the swap in less than 2 hours.
For the 4th Generation Maxima, the Altima and some 3rd Generation Maxima’s there is a core available. What this means is we can send you a completely rebuilt Valvebody and you can perform the swap with little or no downtime. NOBODY can offer you a deal like that!! There is a core deposit of $500 required in most cases. Or if you prefer, you can ship your Valvebody to us for the modification, and we will ship it back to you. There are a limited number of cores available on a first-come, first-served basis. Its important to schedule exactly when you would like to do the swap to keep the downtime of your car to a minimum.
There ya Go !!!!!

This mod is at the top of my wishlist. A friend of mine, JeffO on the BBS, installed it recently in his 98GXE. The shifts occur as fast as it takes you to snap your fingers. With my mods, that could really make a difference in performance.
