Back-up(reverse) lights don't work , code P1706

Hello
02 6mt....When putting the shifter into reverse , no back-up lights come on , SES with P1706 (the SES light came while driving normally , cruising (if related to reverse position , is that possible ?!)

1.Now,I heared the P1706 (which is neutral position sensor/switch) is the cause of that . is that right ?
2.And do I have to drain the trans oil to replace that switch ?

thanks

all those issues are probably in the shifter console in the cabin. check for continuity on the reverse switch. and do manual tranny's have neutral position sensors? if so, why?

also check lighting fuses

i mean, it would make sense to put that sensor in the gear stick itself, as it was designed to always correspond with neutral in the transmission. i just didn't know it was/why it was tied into the ECU. P1706 is park/neutral sensor. kinda funny to find this on a 6MT

and there's probably just a momentary switch that relays the reverse lights to come on when its pressed by the gear selector. im not sure on any of this tho as i have not had my center console out yet, but it would make sense

The backup lights use fuse #30, a 10 amp fuse. Have you checked that?

The park/neutral switch and the backup light switch are two separate switches and both are on the transmission for a manual transmission. See page MT-10 of the 2002 fsm.

The park/neutral switch is used to allow the car to start only in the neutral position for manual trans, park or neutral for auto trans.

Im having this issue also. My reverse lights dont turn on. Checked fuses all good. Checked with multi meter and the wires are getting voltage not the connecter itself.

Im assuming this is a bad reverse sensor on the trans>>? basically the drain plug sensor for the trans

Im having a problem with the reverse lights being on while in neutral.
the reverse lights go out when i shift into gear.
I replaced the backup sensor, harness, cleared the code...
Can anyone tell me what else i should do ??

I had the same problem as blue magic is having, after my buddies did a clutch job. I checked all connections, bought a new switch still nothing. Basically there are two sensors on the trans, a reverse switch and a neutral switch. one is on top by the gear linkage and the other is towards the bottom on the back side ( by the axle). Here's the kicker, they both have the same connector and the whole problem was they hooked them up backwards. Now the reverse lights work when they are supposed to. Hopefully this helps. So try to swith the plugs and try it out!
