19" SV Sport wheels + pothole = pwned

It was already slightly bent... couldn't dodge a pothole and now this... won't even hold air. I also have another very minor bend in the rear. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if they are all bent!

Horrible choice in tires Nissan.... and it appears the wheels aren't really that strong. These potholes were huge or anything.

Finding a replacement was fun too... 300$ Looking for a new set of STRONG 19's or a set of 18's. Will go with a beefier tire as well.

if you are going to keep the car for awhile 5+ years, go to nissan and add the multi-shield plan. its kind of like an insurance coverage on your car for things like rims, tires, paint, glass etc. i dont know if all nissan dealerships use it, but i did. i bent a rim last winter, they back dated the plan for me and ive already covered myself. the plan was about $500, but a new rim from the dealer was like $600+++

the plan also covers blow outs, nails, flats etc. all free.
dings, chips, and glass work.

def worth it IMO.

good luck

Can't blame the tires here. I don't know of any 40 profile tire that should still be used after an impact like this, whether it held air or not.

A pothole does not have to be big to ruin tires and rims. When I hit the sharp edge of even a small (say 4 inches deep) pothole at forty miles an hour in a car with alloy rims and low profile tires, I expect I might lose the tire and/or wheel. Somtimes I am lucky, but sometimes I am not.

The bend in your rim would require a hole at least 4 inches deep, probably deeper. These 7th gen Maxima tires and rims are definitely not designed for bad roads.

With the weather showing in the background in your photo, 16" steel wheels and 65 profile winter tires might be a better bet until spring arrives. The higher the profile, the taller the sidewall is with respect to tire width. Taller sidewalls give more flex room when hitting bad spots in the road, which gives more protection for the tire and rim. A 40 profile tire has very little sidewall height, hence very little flex room and no protection.

Large rims with less tire to absorb impacts, the outcome is obvious, don't blame Nissan, the same stuff happens to BMW/MB owners with big rims

Another word of advice...With low profile tires, it's a good idea to check your pressure once a month and keep it on the high side. Higher tire pressure will protect the rims a little better on bad pavement. My city is like in the top 10 for having the worst roads and my 30 series tires are holding up fine.

I'm curious about this too. Was this in the Nissan "WRAP" as an add-on or was this a dealership special?

I wonder how many of us are gonna find bent rims after the winter weve been having in the tri state area. I looked mine over, but how can you really tell unless you take them off the car and inspect them. Its been a wild winter but Ive been lucky so far.

Drive under control and keep your eyes on the road and you can dodge the pot holes that can bend your rims... its not like you cant see them 99% of the time.

Adding Nitrogen to the tires will help too. I add them to all my vehicles and I extend the life of times by a good margin. Your dealership should offer the service for you.

States running out of money and cancelling things like picking up trash along the roadway and fixing potholes, as well as unusually miserable winter weather, has made driving a lot more hazardous to our tires and wheels than it was in the past.

Actually in my area you can claim any damage to your wheels or tires with the town that it happend. It takes a while with some paperwork but they will reimburse you. You have to show/prove where the pothole. Which is pretty easy these days with a camera on just about any phone.

Thanks for the comments guys. Normally I dodge any significant pothole I can... this one was on the interstate with heavy traffic... it was either the pothole, another car, or the wall

I kept higher pressure in the tire -- 40psi for this reason. The tire was damaged as well... I think after driving a couple feet and realizing the tire was flat did that.

I bought another stock wheel 100% straight and it should match up decent... I'm looking at getting some wheels tho. The 19's look great but I thinking about 18's which will give me a little more tire. No matter what I need more tire... and if I can get a cheap/ugly set of wheels with even more rubber it would help too... Lots of potholes here in the winter time.

I have the forms to file a claim against the state to have them pay for damages. I need to get estimates from a dealer for this wheel and the rear wheel (minor damage) before I can be prepared for court. I'm going to do this soon... and if I can win my case (I don't see I wouldn't) I will be getting all new wheel's and tires.

I don't have as much time as I used to... but I need to start searching around for wheels I like in 18" and lighter than stock (shouldn't be hard)... Looking for something gunmetal or darker... hoping to pick up some mpg and performance along with looks... not asking for much lol.

================

Bottom line. Avoid potholes at all costs if you have the SV Sport wheels!

Los Angeles? Really? LOL, come drive in the northeast during the winter.

There are 2 seasons here:

1. Pot Hole Season
2. Road Construction Season

After seeing this thread. I purchased coverage from the dealer on my new sports model I just picked up. Got it for $450.00 for 4 years 0 deductible. Had nothing but problems with my BMW 335I and the runflats that came with it.

A buddy of mine had tons of trouble with the runflats on his 335 as well. He was glad that he purchased the coverage when he got the car.

When I worked in a dealership, we used Safe-Guard road hazard insurance. Google them... pretty sure you can buy it directly from them and there isn't a deductible.

I had a problem with bending rims when my 20's were on but someone suggested having 40psi in the tires as apposed to 35 and I never had a problem ever since.

When you all get rims for your car do you put them under your car's insurance or get some other protection plan for them? My last set of rims got curb rash a few times and I never felt like going out of pocket to fix that...but if there was some type of repair plan or insurance you can get that you guys recommend that'd be great.

I had a 08 Mercedes E350 with stock sport rims prior to Max, 18", I've change 6 tires each costing me 250-300 each time, depending whether it was front or back. After that I said to myself that I would never get sport rims unless I move out of NYC. Maxima so far has been good, no blowouts yet!

Kinda got raked over the coals but ill get it back in about a year
