CVT's in Frigid Temps.

Who drives their Max in Arctic conditions here? I'm talking like -40°. I was out on the highway this morning and noticed a vibration/noise while opening the throttle ever so slightly. At around 1400 rpm partially opening the throttle caused a vibration and audiable noise (deep bass sound). Only noticed this after driving on the highway for a number of minutes. I have a theory as to why but would like to hear from anyone with information on this.

Thanks.

never noticed that. but do you let your car warm up before you drive it?

When starting from a warm garage, it is not noticed. Only after driving at highway speed for ~10 minutes did this start, and got progressively louder. I then parked for 20 minutes and left it running (allowing the fluids to warm again) and the noise went away for about 5 minutes of highway driving and again returned. Noise/vibration is worst in regular "D" it is less noticable in "6M" on the paddle shift (at same revs of course). I will take the Max home and drive the truck the rest of the time I think...

I have driven in and around that temp. I haven't noticed the sound though.

What I do notice is weird brake pedal feel every now and then. Almost like the pedal doesn't transfer the same amount of force to the brakes as it normally does. Doesn't happen all the time but enough for me to notice.

Man oh man does the poor max whine and groan when you start it up around the lower temps. I feel so bad!

if yours is a 2009, there was a Service Bulletin about this correct? Try a search for it here, maybe that is what you are hearing

Brake pedal felt a little stiff too, all cars whine and groan from a cold start at below -40 in my experience.

Anyone have a TSB #?
