Hey guys,

Changed my oil in the freezing cold last night and realized the wire that runs below the oil filter leading to the crank position center was stripped open and showing exposed wiring. I've always noticed while changing the oil that when you remove the filter the oil runs right down on to this wire. I assume after doing a few oil changes with the oil heated up I've melted the rubber around this wire. It was too cold to mess with replacing it last night so I simply threw some electrical tape on there and will attack it another day.

Has anyone else noticed this? I'm planning on cutting out the melted section and splicing some new wire in there. What problems could arise from this wire getting wet if any?


I'll likely reroute the wire when I repair it to prevent the problem of oil from the filter draining onto it.

 

Between my leaking valve cover and changing oil, that wire is always dripping oil. But the wire still looks good and has all the insulation on it.

 

That's probably the shield wire or the ground. Just clean it up a little and wrap it with some electrical tape and you are good to go. Unless you are having problems I would not even mess with it untill spring.

I doubt it melted or anything like that it's just the shield wire is exposed a bit, not unusual. Don't replace the shield wire, that will cause problems.
