car making wierd noise when starting (starter?)

ok so lately when i start my car after work it never starts right up. been like that for months. but lately its been making a wierd kinda squeaky kinda almost bad connection sound not sure how to describe it. yesterday morning before school i started it up and at first it just made this noise like metal scratching in a way so i stopped, turned the key again n started right up. did it again this morning and today after school. could it be the starter? or could it be something else. i tried to look it up but most people said theres made a clicking noise which mine doesnt. pleeeaasseee someone help me. im trying to sell my car and this is not helping lol.

Starters can do a lot of weird things, but from your description I don't really know. My best guess is that the starter gear isn't engaging the flywheel.

The Bendix drive part could be bad, the armature shaft of the starter motor that the Bendix drive slides on could be dirty & sticky, or the planetary gearset in the starter motor could have lost its lubrication and the starter motor doesn't spin fast enough to "throw" the Bendix drive into the flywheel.

It sounds like a starter problem to me.

Well it could be a lot of things. How about providing us a video not from a cell phone of the squeaking?

Have you tried feathering the throttle as you're starting it? I do that out of habit when I start basically anything with an electric starter.

Sounds like your first problem could have been your starter solenoid; the motor wasn't engaging the crank. But you got that all worked out.
