DIY custom armrest upholstry-before and after AND door panel inserts v.omglikewow

So I decided to re-do my armrest in my 2000 max because the leather was starting to rip, and I have a strange urge to do stupid things to my car.

I just did my center console armrest, door panel inserts are next on my list. This armrest was a little complicated and I had to get my friend to sow 2 pieces together to make it look oem-ish. The new material is suede and it feels great when you rest your arm on it!

before: you can see a tear from being used/old

after:

well now I did my door panel inserts suede to match the armrest cover. I actually decided to do the door panel inserts because my car originally had tan in it, but I did a complete interior black conversion from carpet to headliner. But 1 of the door panels didnt have matching inserts(got them from 2 different max's) so I decided to re do all of them so they would match, which is what led me to do this:

before:

after:

Nice craftmanship, but unfortunately, I think it looks like a towel.

I did something similar on mine, I bought a real leather armrest cover, cut up a memory foam pillow, put the memory foam on the armrest, the put the leather cover on top. So comfortable lol. Looks good!

+1 for DIY creativity. However, that doesn't look right at all. It looks like you wrapped a piece of suede fabric right over the vinyl cover, rather than replaced it. I mean, to each his own of course, but I can't understand why you would do this...

...except that it's probably real soft and comfortable. So you got that going for you.

I painted it satin black.

It actually looks better in person as it looks like it came from factory like that. Ill take some better pics later.

AHHH Glare/Reflection. It looks like it's silver/titanium in the picture.
If it's black, I retract my statement.

I have some serious doubts about that, but I'll wait for pics.

That's got me thinking...could be the first real "mod" on my new used Max! (And it will make the wife nuts if I "waste" more time working on my car...)

Nice idea! There's no substitute for comfort!

That sir, made the sig.

To the OP, looks decent. More shots of where it was sewn? I had the same type of rips in my OEM armrest, and swapped it for one of the RedLineGoods leather covers, still looking new. Another option for anyone who needs to replace it.

I couldn't help but notice it, too. But sighed (yet again) and tried to look away.

The funny thing is, by putting that nonsense in your sig, you're feeding the attention monkey. I know it seems like upside-down reality, but consider the source.

I seem to remember someone here who did their whole car in suede. The owner went to town with interior renovation. Had a member name something to do with football...

That's the guy.

OP, if you look at that member's profile and follow threads created by him, you'll probably find a wealth of suede upholstery information.
