Just thought I would share this Ghetto Air Intake I whipped up today. It took me about an hour and cost ~$60 for the entire setup including filter.

 

Doesn't look bad to me, where did you get the pipe from?
Also your battery needs some love.

 

The pipe is actually PVC from my local hardware store. The large pipe is 3" PVC and the smaller pipe is 1/2" CPVC which are bonded with PVC Cement.

You are right about my battery, and actually the entire engine bay needs some love. Winters are pretty harsh in Central NY state.

 

Thats clean pvc work. Certainly clean than my old setup

VQ35's don't have an IAT (IntakeairTemp) sensor in the intake piping?

 

Did pvc piping really get that much more expensive? I made my dual intake for about $40.

If you've stretched those couplers to fit, rather than bought reducing couplers, I don't think it will last very long without shaking apart.

You could use this DIY experience to build on what you've learned, and do it up better.

No harsher than Upstate NY, and I drive my Max every winter.

The PVC was cheap and I bought the shortest lengths offered at the hardware store. I only used 9 inches of the 3" PVC, 6 inches of the 1/2" CPVC, and a couple dabs of cement. Needless to say I have plenty left over. I'm certain this build could be even less expensive now that I know exactly what it entails, and if I had some time to shop around. That being said you could also spend a lot more depending on your flavor of couplers and air filter.

Hide battery from picture if you're not going to take the time to clean it off LOL. Go through all that work for the intake, but the car won't start soon.

Wow... getting some heat for the dirty engine bay. I suppose my next thread will include some before and after pics of an engine bay cleaning. In my defense I havent cleaned it yet because we still had snow up until the heavy rain yesterday. To be honest I wont touch it until the majority of the salt is off the roads, which probably wont be for another week or so. Hang tight folks, I will make it right.

Thanks for the feedback on the Ghetto Air Box, the car seems to idle and run much smoother now. Not too mention it sounds like it has some ***** now.

Nice one man. I just put together my own ghetto hybrid SRI today as well from spare parts from the injen that my car had when I got used. Look's very nice! I'm seriously considering doing the same. Looks better than what my setup is now haha.

O wait, did you have that dual intake thing where one was like an injen CAI setup and the other was like an SRI? I suppose it was from the CAI setup that you hydrolocked then..

 

Yeah. I bought BOP's for the pipes but that day decided to run all CAI instead of running both open. I didnt know it was going to rain badly like it did. Had I run both open, the SRI wouldve acted as a bypass valve ....Silver lining is that I got a DE-k swap out of it

But even though, my setup wasnt near as clean as yours OP. Seems some ppl mistook it for the midpipe knight sells. Really clean job mang

Any concerns about the operating temp? I thought I read somewhere that PVC's max operating temp was at 140*F. Is that safe inside the 5.5 gen's engine bay? Even with hard 'performance' driving?

hmm.... i'm sure it's not the hottest part of the engine bay over there and the biggest cause for concern would probably be where the pipe meets the intake manifold. No idea what the temperature reaches there though.

I ran mine with no issues for over a year. One of the pipes was routed like how the Injens are for the A32's and A33's (near the radiator).

 

that power wire just kills it for me too. why not run it through the fender? its just 4 extra little spider clips to access it. dont even need to take the rims off.

 

Went to take a look at the PVC and CPVC pipes.

For the 3" PVC, I found one that was thick and one that was thin. From the looks of it, the thick one would have had trouble fitting in a coupler. Would the thin pieces work fine?

Also, are those spray painted cause the only ones I see are white.

 

They have pvc couplers. Either the rubber ones or elbows themselves.

 

This setup was pvc with flared ends. Hacksawed a piece of pipe and connected both sides together.
