New Engine Harness Require New ECU?

I am in need of a new Engine Room Harness. I found one but was wondering if I need to purchase the ECU that is attached to that particular harness or can I just use my existing one? Thanks for the help

Just plug and play. Use your old ECU.

Out of curiosity, what happened to yours?

These things typically do not just "go bad". Kinda of a PITA because there are multiple sections to it (i.e, coils/O2 sensors, injectors, MAF, you get the point) and not much room.

Also, removing the old unit from the cab is tricky, and even more-so if you have an AT.

I took my car to the dealer and they said I needed a new egi harness. Currently my car will not start.

So one day the car just wouldn't start?

Try and get a second opinion. Dealerships are horrifically notorious for misinformation.

Find a local guru to help you out if you don't know what you're looking for. My guess is, you only need a section of it. How comfortable are you with your car, and being under the hood?

A used harness can run anywhere between 60-150$ from a junkyard, but like I stated in my prior post, it is in sections and to change the entire harness out would require a lot of time and effort.

Further diagnose and pinpoint exactly what is wrong.

I moderate this forum, of course I saw it.

EGI can mean essentially any harness under the hood, and there a boatload of sub harnesses.

I would get the codes, post them and then we can pinpoint what sub harness is needed using this sometimes trusty item:

You guys are so much help thank you very much! I know just the basics, I wouldn't say I know that much about anything under the hood.
These are the codes I've gotten so far:
P0420
P0021
P1456
P1612

You guys are my best bet to help me get this all fixed!

420 is front precat
0021 cam position sensor
1456 evap valve
1612 is the security system i think

Awesome work. The dealer said the engine harness was spliced into and would need replacing.

I'll put my money on the cam sensor and the smart entrance security module, now as for the engine harness as the guys have mentioned there are several sub harnesses and the main harness (pictured below) and yes it can be trying to remove it all in one piece, the second picture in the internal harness under the dash which I also removed in one piece.

Main engine harness:

Internal Harness:

and if you should need the Smart Entrance Security Module: I have one of those as well

Great info Ghost. What is a smart entrance security module? I did get a new key programmed but I assume has nothing to do with the smart entrance security module correct? I was able to pick up the main engine harness for $150. At this point I'm not sure if i'm going to need that internal harness but i just might.

The P1612 code is NATS which has its own separate module, the IMMU module (in the steering column by the ignition switch), not the Smart Entrance Security module. Here's what the FSM says about P1612 -

NATS MALFUNCTION P1612 - CHAIN OF ECM-IMMU
Communication impossible between ECM and IMMU. (In rare case, “CHAIN OF ECM-IMMU” might be stored during key registration procedure, even if the system is not malfunctioning.) see EL-369

the cam code and the Nats code are your issues.

Ok cool so I should be looking into fixing those first then? Where would I get the Camshaft Sensor? Dealership? I did get a new key programmed at the dealership. Does the immobilizer unit need to be replaced? Also my battery is dead but I am using a portable starter for the battery, should I just go buy a new battery? Why would the battery be dying now when it was working before? could it be the alternator is not recharging the battery?

If you have a harness with cut wires, I would take care of that first before buying any other parts like the cam sensor, which I would buy from Nissan. When all the wires are good, then see how the car runs and what, if any, codes you have.

As far as the battery goes, it may have died from over-use, so-to-speak. If it's an older battery, this is very likely if you have been starting the car a lot and it takes a lot of cranking. You can start the car and check the voltage with a voltmeter. If the altenator is working, the voltage will be about 14.5.
