Check Engine Light is on? Only 68000 miles?

Hi folks

I have a 2002 maxima. Only 68000 mi. Had it for about a week, car runs fine, no issues, but couple days ago, the check engine light is on. Its bothering me and not sure what to do. i took it to auto zone and the codes came up as
P0455 AND P1147.
i tried lookin and seein if this was a recall but i didnt find anything. does anybody have any suggestions, and should i take the car back to the dealer ?

thx for the help

If you only had it a week, the dealership would be the first place to call. Ask them to fix it, see what happens...

What MadMax07SK said.

P0455 is a leak in the tubing that sucks out the fumes from the gas tank. The gas tank filler cap is part of this. P1147 is bank 1 heated oxygen sensor 2. I think that the P1147 is probably a result of the P0455.

Take it back to the dealer. If he is any kind of a reputable dealer, he will take care of it.

Probably a loose gas cap and either the secondary bank 1 O2 is bad or the precat is going bad. If after the O2 is replaced, you get a P0430, then you know the precat is also bad.

I have had the P0455 before and it was just as simple as replacing the gas cap, but before you replace the gas cap check the condition of the gas tank entrance tube for any debris on the threads or rusting ... wipe this area clean first from any possible debris and then wipe down the inner part of the gas cap its self ... check for any debris caught along the rubber that seals the tank when you put the cap on. If you still get the code then I would spend the 20.00 for a replacement gas cap.

Both time I got that code with my other 5.5 gen, it was that the gas cap wasn't properly tightened.

An EVAP leak will never set off an O2 code FYI.

You're right. A vacuum leak and an O2 code are like different worlds. The point I was trying to make is that I'm convinced that the ECU gets confused when something happens and it will spit out several codes, not necessarily related. Reset the ecu and when it spits out codes again, you may not get all of the same ones. I think a prime example of this is the knock sensor code.

Ive seen quite a few 02-03 max's with cracked carbon canisters cause the p0455. What happens is the mounting bungs for the vent control valve bolts starts to rust, especially on cars from up north, and the corrosion build and cracks the plastic around the metal bungs. If you get under the car and remove the 2 mounting bolts from the vent valve and remove the valve you can inspect the canister flange for cracking.

The p1147 is most likely a faulty bank 1 rear o2 sensor.

A week after you buy it, it throws all of those codes? Disreputable dealer. They turned off the SES light so they could sell it and then walk away. They ripped you off. I would return the car or sue them.

It threw 2 codes dude. You know neither the poster nor the dealership...subsequently all you're doing is antagonizing and acting like a GD troll. STFU.

Wow, DUDE. 17 posts, all in the last 2 days, and suddenly you're the forum expert? You STFU! You think it's just a coincidence that the SES light went on a week after the car was sold? How stupid can you be?

The answer here is very simple - take the car back to the dealer.

Agreed, especially if they only give the 30 day warranty coverage...

Also I would contact your state Dept of Motor Vehicles to register a complaint.

^^ What he said, it's uncommon but not rare. I picked up a 2002 Maxima SE w/58k miles two weeks ago. I was checking dealer auctions, and though this was the lowest mileage 5.5 I've come across there are a few every week with 60k-70k miles.

Bought my '03 SE back in Fall of 2002, and I'm only at 67K miles right now.

Not everyone drives 100 miles a day. Or even 100 miles a week, for that matter.

5.5 gen maximas are sensative when it comes to the check engine light. Mine has 22k and turned on da light the other day. When to the dealer and told me it was the bank 2 sensor 2 oxygen sensor.

I've had the CEL on for about a month, this morning i put a small bottle of Lucas fuel system cleaner before filling up and after about 20 miles it went off and it stay off so far. I'm not saying this is going to fix it, or that it fixed it fore me (maybe it was just a coincidence), but for only $4 i think it's worth a try.
