1982 Maxima Ignition Timing
My maxima was hesitating slightly, so I checked the timing it was at 6 degrees, and the car info says 0 Degrees. So, I changed it and now my car has become a hesitating poke. I need to know what needs to be unhooked,or Plugged up to set the Timing correctly, so I can continue to brag about my car.
Thanks,
Jeff

I don't have a first gen or any specific info about one, so I can't give you extremely detailed information. However, I do have a 2nd gen, so I can probably give you some general info on adjusting the timing.
For starters, make sure your A/C is off, the car's shifted in neutral, the headlights, defroster, and heater are off, the front wheels are straight ahead, and the car is warmed up to normal temp. You'll probably have to run the car at about 2000 rpm for about 2 mins, disconnect the idle-up solenoid harness connector, then race the engine 2-3 times and run it for about a minute at idle. Then you can use the timing light to check the timing and if it's off you can adjust the distributor.
As for the 2nd and 3rd gens, our timing is set at 20 & 15 degrees respectively, which can be higher if we're running high octane. 0 degrees seems kind of low so you may want to double check that number, especially considering it was at 6 degrees. You might have a problem other than incorrect ignition timing to consider.
