VE 5speed searchers rejoice - Up for sale is a 1992 Maxima SE 5spd
To those of you forum'ers who know me, this is not my original 92 that ive owned since 2001, this is another one I bought in sept 2009 as a daily driver to buy myself time to fix my main car
Location is holbrook, long island NY. Im keeping it local sale, Im willing to meet on long island but the buyer is to arrange shipping if he/she needs to do so
I have pictures at the bottom of this posting
Mileage was 165k when I bought it and now has 181k
Price $1800
Facts & What it has:
- Black exterior, black/dark gray cloth interior. Recently cleaned and waxed, It does have your usual dings here and there for a 19yr old car though
- VTCs are ok, a tick maybe here or there when cold, to be expected with VEs at some point. Oil changed every 3000mi with Mobil 1 synthetic.
- Coolant is clean and green, no smells or gunk in the radiator
- Stock Bose radio, front speakers work great, the rear speakers made an intermittent noise so i just unplugged them
- Sunroof with deflector mounted on roof
- 4th gen Maxima SE wheels with Continental 215/55/R16 tires
- non-ABS and non-airbag (less engine bay clutter, less weight, less parts to break)
- All 4 windows have working motors/regulators
- A/C works 100%
- Clutch (stock) works great, no problems engaging or shifting
- Heated mirrors, rear defrost and both work 100%
- No rust problems on the body or underbody
- Still has the OEM foam spoiler which is not peeled up on the ends
What needs attention:
- The transmission has an input shaft bearing noise (foot off of the clutch and the noise is there, step on the clutch and the noise is gone) The car still does drive and shift properly, but I would urge this to be replaced soon. I would do it myself but I just dont have the time, I asked 2 local transmission shops and their approximate cost was $500-600 to do the entire job, and about half that amount if I pulled the tranny out myself and handed it to them.
Fixed! Transmission now works 100%, no noises at all - see post #36
- It has a slight missfire at idle, but it seems to go away when you drive it. The gas mileage i was getting with it was still what these cars should get: high teens-low 20s MPG stop+go and mid-high 20s on highway driving
Also i did a compression test on the motor just for curiosity and the numbers were very good and within close range to each other
psi numbers:
Cyl 1 - 190, Cyl 3 - 185, Cyl 5 - 180
Cyl 2 - 200, Cyl 4 - 180, Cyl 6 - 190
- Outside air seeps in through the 4 face/panel vents while youre driving (i switched that lever on the left up and down and it still does it) This is really only a pain in the winter as cold air comes in through those vents but what i did was manually shut each vent and switched the heat to blow through the floor or defrost vents and it was fine. A/C is unaffected, it still blows nice and cold through any vent in the car. - Fixed! see post #9
- Speedometer needle dances around. I think someone posted in the 3rd gen forum about how to fix the cluster as far as re-soldering a capacitor on the back but I havent had time to pull the gauge cluster out to look at it. The speedometer on my other 92 does the same thing
- small dent in the trunk lid right below the 3rd brake light
That pretty much covers it, this is the first im advertising it so i chose to do it here on the forum and see it go to a fellow maxima fan before i put it on craigslist, ebay, etc.. Reply here to the thread or PM me or call/text 631-680-three-seven-eight-five

Wow, that's very clean. Can't believe this was your "junker" while you were rebuilding the other one
The outside air coming in is because the backside "arm" of the fresh air lever (that you mentioned moving up and down) is very delicate and they seem to ALL break where the cable connects the arm. So, once it's broken it's either stuck open or closed, and flipping the lever on the climate control is pointless because the cable is no longer connected at the back. I've yet to find one yet where it wasn't broken.
If you look behind the climate control unit, you can find that cable and manually shut the vents by following the cable to the adjusting flap/assembly. IIRC it's the cable wrapped in a blue sheath and goes over to kind of under/behind the glove box.
So you finished the VE overhaul? When are you gonna post a big pic thread?

ah thanks james I bad a feeling it was something to do with a flap being stuck open. I know you can't get the climate control head unit out without removing the entire center stack of the dash so I didn't want to mess with it. but maybe I'll try just pulling off the trim and look for that cable you mentioned.

You don't even need to pull off the trim. Just look under the glove box from the passenger floorboard area (yes you have to be in that God-awful position on your back looking up under the glove-box/dash

Id like to see it sell it by August since thats when the registration expires. I drive it now about once a week just so it doesnt sit there and to keep the battery charged, things moving etc

Update - I went under the dash last night and flipped that lever (as per James' picture) and then took the car for a ride.. the air problem seems to be fixed now. When the "C" recirculate button is on, no outside air blows in through the vents. It was a warm & humid night last night when i drove it and the A/C was nice and cold

You've got PM. I am interested. For now the money I was hoping to have for purchasing another Maxima had to go to paying off my Wife's van. I am working on getting some more cash together. Are you fixed on the price? Please PM me with your best offer. Also, would you consider taking a good condition 1992 Toyota Previa LE Minivan w/158k white on blue w/ captian's chairs, etc. as an even trade? If I serviced it and sold it I would ask around $2000. bump and update- car now has a donut spare in the trunk and I just washed it yesterday. had a few folks interested but the car is still here and still for sale to anyone
thanks- i have eibach/tokico combo on my car, which i think the eibachs are a little over an inch drop. if it wasnt a daily driver i mightve gone lower on intrax or something but im happy with it as is
I was trying to sell the car as is and be a little negotiable considering it needs that repair. If i decided to have the bearing issue repaired, i would be more firm on the price
I'm very interested in Ur 3rd gen I have a 89 se 5 speed but it it has some rust and it was hit in the rear so not the same anymore hopefully u still have it by Feb that's when ill have my taxes I'm praying u don't sell it lol
bump! The transmission issue is now fixed! no bearing noises at all. No clutch noise or shifting problems either. I just drove it yesterday and its smooth through all the gears 1-5 and reverse. Price for the car is still at 1800
Ive been getting lots of on and off interest, the car is for sale to anyone, first come with the money gets it. This is a good chance now to buy it with the transmission problem crossed off the list. I dont want to take deposits or hold the sale. At the end of the day its still a 20yr old car, I cant guarantee or warranty anything. I did list what i know it needs (see the first post)
