What are the symptoms of a key that is not programmed to a car

I lost my key, and infiniti cut the key by VIN number. I have a 2000 Infiniti I30. They said it needed to be programmed but when I put the key in, the raido starts, and the car tries to start but doesnt turn over.

It sounds like its about to start but it doesnt.

is this what happens when a key is not programmed, I was under the impression that it would not turn anything on. Thanks

Just cranks and cranks, sounds like you are out of fuel.

Their is a chip in the key head (the rubber section) that needs to be programmed. It's linked in to the anti theft. Kinda like a kill switch.

If it's like most systems the car will not allow fuel to flow which prevents ignition but does not prevent radio use and what not.
