Start up engine tick tick noise

I just got a 2002 maxima, with 95k miles

when I start up in the morning there is a tick tick loud noise for about

2 seconds and then goes away, not able to figure out why this noise.

Even if I start up the car after one hour I get this.

Any suggestion any comments.

Thanks in advance.

could be your valve tapping, could be your oil pump...do you have an oil light thats synonmous (sp?) w/ the ticking?

When I first got my car, it did that. Since our cars are known to burn oil, mine was low and an oil change completely eliminated the knock/click.

Mines been doing this for years. I learned to live with it...

Only thought I had was timing chain tensioner allowing chain to make noise as tension is put on it once cranked over.

Oil + filter was just changed, and noise is pretty irritating, no oil light is flashing.

Im guessing it's the timing chain tensionors. Anyother symptoms , I.E smoking from tail pipe, rough idle maybe missing. You state 95,000 mls, could be tensionors. What's your oci. In paramedicine we look at things like low or high bp heart rate rate of of resperations and listen for odd heart sounds, like valve tapping (stenosis) point being, is the pt. A symptomatic or symptomatic. These thing will often tell us if we are treating or just riding to the e.d and just doing pallative care. Same with your car. They do talk, just not in our language.Lol. You said your oil level was good. What type oil is in the car. Sorry sometimes I get nuts

I agree with phatboislim. Any reputable mechanic would be able to help.

I may be wrong here, but I thought there is no adjustment on our valves.... hydraulic 'lifters'.

I do believe tunermaxima is correct. My mechanic says he can do tensionors for 140.00 out the door. I don't know if I would call it a big job as much as a complete pita. What's your mechanical ability. I mean you are going to be needing to tear Down the top of engine and accessing from passenger side. I also think you need to pull the vc's 5-30 is good not synthetic oil? I.E. White smoke, blue smoke, black smoke. Any smoking. Alittle smoke at start up is normal.

Good thing is our cars use timing chain and not belts.

There's only ONE tensioner.

for $140 I wouldn't pickup a rag, I'd let him do it. Even if I was thoroughly experienced. the timing chain/tensioner is a PITA without pullingthemotor.

I thought there were 2 tensionors. I stand corrected it is 1. Oh and tunermaxima your 100 percent correct lifters on vq35de are hydraulic. I re confirmed that with research. Also found tsb's for engine clicking. I did not however find out what Nissan did
Fir the fix or if they even did have a fix.

theres more than one theres 2 if not 3...when i was planning to get mine replaced (the noise i thought was my tensioner ended up being my compressor going out) there were two that were listed...one is 'exterior'/easier to get to than the other

there's one right as soon as you open the timing chain cover, which they said is the most common...and either theres one thats to the bottom right, or behind the rear part of the timing chain cover, i cant remember, but theres more than one

Yes you're right, there's actually3.

The primary chain has the main tensioner, - 1. This is what I was referring to.

Then there are 2 secondary chains for the DOHCs, each secondary chain has a tensioner, for a total of 3 Tensioners.

I would replace the chain tensioners. Just my 2 cents. And look at it this way, if you replace them, your good for another 100,000. With this being said, remember kiss ( keep it simple stupid) check the less expensive options first. Fix the obvious and the easiest stuff.Or take it to a mechanic and get their opinions.

You sure it's not the 1-second rattle? About 1/2 the cars out there have it on a cold start. Nissan originally did a recall on it but it does not appear to do any damage and most folks just live with it.

Mostly noticeable on cold start ups, usually does not do it when the engine is warm.

Sounds like it's the lifters pumping up. Most cars with higher mileage do this. Some are worse than others. I know that at our dealership if a car in for service sits for a while they tap like crazy when started up for a few seconds before they get pumped up with oil pressure and the noise goes away.

Yea, mine does it to. It's the lifters. Doesn't do it in warm weather as bad as cold weather. It's just the lifters pumping up.
