hi everyone i recently acquired a new set of wheels from a 2004 maxima and i was wondering would this effect the fuel mileage on my 4th gen maxima. if so, by how much? i believe these wheels are about 25 pounds a piece. heres a picture of them on my car..

More weight the wheel is the harder the engine has to work to move them. 25LBS isn't incredibly heavy.

If there is a loss in fuel millage it would be very nil.

 

more weight to rotate means more work for the engine. You might lose some mileage, but probably won't be noticeable, but track your mileage and see. Usually it takes more severs tire and wheel up-sizing to really notice think of a 4x4 truck when they go from 28" tires to 37"'s and wonder why they have no power and poor mileage.

 

I really don't think so....I have OEMs now, but I had 2 different sets of 18's and 235/40-18's. Problem is after denting more than 4 rims I got tired of it, didn't really help the handling and eventually shook the front end even with rebalancing and alignments...mpgs unchanged. Looked good but...

Those tires look too meaty.

Yes, a bit big. I actually thought those were 17" tires because of the big sidewall.

I think a more appropriate size would be 235/40r18. That would keep the speedo more accurate. I don't really know how that affects mpg.

225/40's or 235/40's would be better IMHO.

 

yea looking at it more and more they are starting to look real meaty to me. i want to downsize but tires are too expensive and im too poor to replace a whole set! anyone selling a set of 235/40 or 225/40?

 

Check the classifieds. Someone has a set of 225/40's.

 

I went from my stock 16" to 6gen 18" no major diifrence in mpg

I had 18X8.5 wheels running 245/40's and it dropped my mileage by a lot. On a 18" wheel thats 8.5 wide the 245/40 tires kept the overall tire diameter as close to stock as possible to avoid speedo issues.

Have you used the tire calculator at miata.net? That thing is a blessing for calculating tire sizes.

I went down to about 24mpg and lost a bit of acceleration. But it corners so good and stops so fast that I dont care

 

it's a science, you don't want to change the OD of the original. 235/40-18 is the correct size. 245/45 is wider, and the 45 aspect ratio is taller. If you want more sidewall then 235/45-17 would be correct.

 

245/45 came with these wheels, so i guess these are the OEM size for 6th gen maximas..

Even on my new wheels I'm running 225/40's.

 

Never noticed a calculable difference in MPG on any of these setups:

G35 Coupe 17s (Staggered)
225/50f+235/45r
235/45 all around

Velow Racing 17x7s 12lbs each
225/45s

99 Mustang GT 16x7.5's (19lbs each)
225/55's

 

I guess I don't understand what the purpose of putting the wrong size on is....it's +1, +2, +3, etc. So simple. But again, as I pointed out, there's no performance gain whatsoever, and the 235/40-18's just cost too much from bending rims. The car rode badly, no performance gain, and cost too much. Back on when oems with re960's. Now when it hits bumps no worries.
